Is the 2.0 litre as good as the 2.5 litre

Thanks for all your comments. I think I will drive a 2.0l and see what I think.
I have to admit to loving the sound of a straight six though !!

It's the only way you'll ever know if it's right for you. I went from a 135i E88 to a 120i E88 and vowed that I wouldn't have another 2.0l 4 cyclinder as the consumption was worse and didn't sound anywhere as good. It was almost bordering on the sound of a diesel, not a smooth growl that you get from the 6 cylinders. Plus I never had any issues with the 135i but many with the 120i including coil pack recall and a failed hydro unit which didn't help my feelings.

As have been said on here a few guys have gone to 2.0l 28i's which have given them a good performance with good fuel economy, for me however economy isn't top of my list on cars like this but a nice place to be, good power and a nice sound is.

There are a few 23is up for sale on bmw AUC site, hopefully you could try both one after the other and make up your mind.

Totally agree, I tried a couple of the 4 cylinder E89s before deciding on a 2.5. The lower power ones felt gutless. The more powerful one went OK but sounded all wrong and certainly did not have the smoothness I expected.
 
Not being a 35i owner anymore, and now with a V6 in my Merc, I still think back to how amazing the 35i is, and how better the 35iS would be.....and I am still tempted to come back. It's an amazing engine and the sound and the pull of that twin turbo straight 6 is amazing too
 
BUT if I do go back and I want a newer car, I would still take the big discounts on the big engined cars, and the price diff between the two would not be that huge....
 
Unfortunately the 2.0 four pot was probably the worst engine I've ever had in any car owned although I think the one in my Zed wasn't a great example, rattly, whiny and generally unpleasant. The N20 had supposidly won engine of the year accolade but all I can think of is the judging panel must have been deaf. I had high hopes for this engine in the Zed but was disappointed from the off. I've noticed BMW use this engine in the 3 Series Touring I may go for next so will definitely get the diesel as it will quieter and more economical :)

and of course the 4 cylinder 2.0 is the 6 but with 2 lost :)

a bit like the early E30 M3's .... :driving:
