Is it safe to remove the battery?

Hi all,

My battery has been drained and I need to charge it up. Is it safe to remove the battery completely? I would like to take it inside overnight and charge it at home before putting it back in the car.

Are there any risks in terms of resetting the ECU or messing up the electronics in any way if I remove the battery? Or is it simply a case of removing it, charging it, and re-installing it? It's a 2003 3.0L roadster.

When I removed my battery to charge it,the air-con/heater and rear screen heater wouldn't work when I put the battery back on.It was a BMW dealer job to get it all working again.I would try and charge it on the car.My zed is a 06 so yours may be different.
 
I have removed batteries in my Zed's for a very short period of time to replace without any problems. It seems that if you remove the battery for any length of time it will cause some problems that might need to require a visit to the dealer to sort.
 
Very few people have had problems with "transportation mode" ive disconnected mine quite a few time without issue and had te battery on my old car drain twice agin without issue.
 
Sorry if I'm teaching grandmother to suck eggs but it's worth stating the process:

1). Remove negative lead

2). Remove positive lead

3). Replace positive lead

4). Replace negative lead

Less sparks and fires this way.
 
Hmm, judging by these comments there is a good chance Ill encounter problems if I remove it then. Trouble is the car is parked on the street in London, not immediately next to my house / a power socket. Any suggestions on how to charge it without removing it? Thanks again.
 
With your circumstances I guess the only way would be one of these little solar chargers that plug into the cigar lighter socket.
 
Hi All,

There are portable chargers available. You can hook that up and leave it in the boot for an hour or so. They can be a bit noisy though, so passers-by might wonder what's going on. Don't want to attract too much unnecessary attention.
 
Your battery maybe on it's way out like mine was.I charged mine for 24 hour's + and it still wouldn't turn the car over.Best thing to do is get a new battery and swap it over within 10 mins of disconnecting the old one.
 
I replaced my battery last weekend, as the original 2006 item had finally given up. Had everything to hand and the change took less than a minute. Only thing to re-set was the clock. No problems with windows, a/con etc.
