Is it ok to replace 1 snapped spring or should I do both?

So, I have heard quite a few times that you MUST change both springs at the same time, but, is this genuinely necessary or just scaremongering by BMW to get you pay out an extra £100 for 1 spring! I have heard some people saying that it is absolutely fine to change 1, so can anyone who knows what they are talking about give me their opinion please!

p.s. Is there anywhere to get decent springs for the m-sport suspension cheaper than £100 a side? £200 seems like a lot of money for 2 springs!

I don't see any reason why except the theory that if one has gone the other one will go soon too !

I think I know what I'm talking about.... springs isn't it ?? :tumbleweed:

People say the other spring will be "worn" and they wont have the same characteristics any more but I'm not so sure I agree. Yeah there may be a very small difference but surely not enough to effect the handling of the car?

I only changed the one when mine went... both were still going strong when I sold with no adverse handling effects. BMW dealer did the work too and didn't even try to get me to do both.

BMW will only change the broken one under warranty, not both.... i changed both mine though, one under warranty and one at own expense.

You will hear mixed reviews on this. I have changed separate rear springs before and all has been fine. Even the dealers will change on side as stated.
Although I do agree that if one side is gone there is a good chance the other will not be too far behind, but that's not necessarily always the case.
If it ain't broke don't fix it :D

change both, its an easy job to do yourself (or any mechanic its not a dealer only part). literally 1 bolt to take off. go to suplex to get the springs i think i paid ~100 for both springs and it took me <1 hr to change them over.

As someone who works with springs I can tell you that springs deteriote wrt stiffness or rate with use, the new one WILL be stiffer than the old one.

It will make a difference to the balance of the car, but I have no advise on the risk, but you only get one life :!:

Change both or go for a set of Eibach's around £200

Or get them from Germany (ebay.de) for under £100 delivered.

Are there any benefits of the Eibachs over OEM BMW parts? I definitely don't want the car any lower. Also, will these be the same/better spec than the m-sports springs currently fitted?

If you don't want it any lower then don't get them. I've never heard of Eibach's snapping... unlike OE springs, read into that about better spec as you will.

There are 3rd party springs that are OEM spec (I believe) but don't have the failure rate. I went the Eibach route and regretted it (lowered the car too much for UK roads)

Were you on standard or sports suspension to start with?

It's a shame Eibach don't do a "standard height" spring.

Any suggestions for replacement "sport height" springs?
