Over the years I have owned about 20 different cars . Anywhere from Honda to Ford to other BMW's none had so many problems. It has been almost a year since I owned my Z4 and have had the following things repaired listed below. I was curious if I am just having bad luck or if my issues are pretty common and if so why the hell is BMW slackin on their product I pay for a BMW so I don't have these problems.

Here is a list of what has been fixed for free under warranty by the dealer in a 11 month period.

OEM Amp for premium sound system
Ceiling liner ( completely replaced )
drivers side cup holder
Passenger seat belt recoil ( drivers was able to be fixed without replacing)
3rd brake light ( cracked )
Rear passenger coil spring ( snapped in half )
Gauge Cluster ( fogged up )

The cupholder, brake light and cracked coil spring are common, and I've heard of the amp being replaced before too. So not good, but not too unusual.

so far.......

Covered by the bumper to bumper warranty:

Ceiling Liner (took several trips to the dealer afterward to get the top to work properly again)
Left and right upper side window seals
Third brake light
left door window switch assembly
shift knob
parking brake handle
windshield (due to a rain sensor delamination)

Not covered by the warranty:

Left strut support and now I just found the right one is also crack

Thork what happened to the liner? And the shift knob and the parking brake?

I suppose the rain sensor is another common problem. It happened on mine too, although not bad enough for BMW to swap the screen.

My '03 has only had one warranty repair; the amp. Everything else has been groovy.

I think you hear a lot about people who have problems, and nothing from the people who don't (the majority of people).

95K on my 04 and I have had the plastic parts on the steering wheel replaced, paint chip issues. I had the stero relpaced 2 times.

The plastic bracket that holds the liner to the frame broke off in the passenger side, giving a saggy apearence, the shift knob, somehow got loose, same with the brake handle

It took me several trips to the stealer and every time I got the same answer " per foreman, delamination is normal" until I request the foreman to show me the documentation/manuals to support it, so he gave up and replaced the windshield under warranty

So far (after 9000miles):

Faulty passenger autodimming sideview mirror (astigmatic)
Incorrect driver's side quarterpanel window (euro spec)
Broken cupholder

4 1/2 months and 5700 miles - a loose gear shift knob has been the only problem to date.

16 months and 17,500 miles - 1 service visit to adjust brake light sensor otherwise flawless (knocking on wood now)

'03 3.0 with 25K miles. The only problems I've had are the rain sensor delamination with the windshield replaced, the stereo making a clicking sound when the car is turned off and the cracked third break light. They are all known problems and were replaced under warranty without any questions. Now that the warranty is out I'm sure I'll have one thing go wrong every week.

And the difference between a Euro-spec and a US-spec ¼-panel is?
Pre-tinted glass. You guys get it, we don't.

I really wanted to get the other side replaced to the nice tinted type, but wasn't thinking when I brought it to their attention. Oh well.

You mean the 'sun protection glass' which is a dark tint and optional? I didnt' spec that as I thought on such a small car it might make the interior too dark.

03 30i cracked third brake light, loose passenger side window ,faulty sensor, all fixed under warranty. With all the mods I've done,I think they were the only original parts left on the car

I sometimes worry that I have the music on so loud all the time that I can't hear if there're any strange noises coming from the Zed. Hmmm. I can't figure out the solution to that one.
