Is a cold air intake worth it?

Hello everyone!
I've been searching around for a bit, but I haven't exactly found the answer I'm looking for.
Are cold air intakes worth it for Z4's?

I know a lot of stock intakes are very good these days, so I don't want to do anything that will make a noticeable loss in power for my car.

I'm wanting to get more noise, and hopefully equal power out of a cold air intake.

Here's the one I'm looking at. Please let me know what you think of it.

have you got a sound generator you can take the foam out of? that gives a lot more intake noise and is free...

Yeah don’t expect any power gains on thes. I fitted an aFe intake and it’s purely for bay bling and noise :)

I'm not sure. The previous owner told me about it, but I don't know where it is.

Hi, plenty of info on the sound generator on here if you use the search function - I think the standard air intake is a cold feed system as it draws air from the front of the car?

Sound generator is the pipe assembly between the air intake box and the firewall. It basically pipes intake noise directly into the cabin via a resonator. The piece of pipe that goes into the firewall has a piece of foam at either end (one white, one black). You can take one or both out or even trim them to suit. The noise at high revs with both pieces out can be a little intrusive!

I’ve got the aFe Stage 2 dry intake on my Si, and haven’t noticed any change -be it positive or negative- on mine. The intake sound above 4K rpm is very addictive however. It’s really given the N52 a bit of a soundtrack. Coupled with a Bastuck backbox, and I’m a happy guy.

Would I purchase new? Maybe now that I know how it sounds, but otherwise I’d probably look at other areas to spend on first. Managed to pick it up second-hand for an absolute steal on eBay from a guy returning his Si to stock.

As said: engine bay bling is definitely on the “advantages” list!

It's only on the 3 litre apparently.

Easiest way to do the mod is to remove the panel behind the bottom of the glove box (2 Philips head screws either side - drop panel and pull towards you). You will see the pipe and a piece of foam to the right - pull foam out and put panel back. The easiest of mods.

Does make me wonder what chance electric sports cars have, when enthusiasts are taking out bits of old foam just to listen to that lovely induction noise on a straight six. 8)

There’s probably an app that makes them sound exactly how you want! :o

Rob, your chatting to a man who doesn't even put the radio on. There is no such App and never will be. :D

I had the aFe intake on my Z4MR and my first 3.0si. This time round on my second 3.0si I went for a GruppeM.

Does it make any difference to the performance, no. Does it make it sound better, yes :D.
