Does anyone know if there is any advantage between

this ipod lead which uses the multi pin on the bottom of ipod

and this ipod lead which uses the headphone socket on ipod

the only difference is that with the latter, you can change the play volume via the iPod.
Wheras with the first, you can only change the volume on the device you plug it into (eg, the stereo unit).

there's no other difference.

I have one of these and it seems to be great. had it for about 3-4 months now. Works great

I favour line outs over headphone sockets (the first one) as the signal is more consistent - although with modern electronics I don't think you'll get any nasty surprises!

I you have a look around you may be able to get the first type with a charger build in...

(I'll have a quick look now)

EDIT... okay this is the sort of thing I was thinking of:

Goes into the cigar power and the aux cable to Z4s aux socket. I'm sure I've seen something smaller with the aux out on top of the power plug.

If you haven't done the aux adapter on the car yet then consider the Dension GW - I have one and it works great - displays text on the Business CD Radio and the iPod's tucked out of site in the glove box... charging!

Cheers chaps :D , I've already done the Aux adapter and found a lead like the second one which goes in the headphone socket and it works fine but didnt know if the first one would be any better.

nah.. those connectors are an easier way of damaging the bottom connector of the iPod.
Unless the cable is of good construction (which that second one doesnt when you compare it to BMW's own iPod cable), its quite likely they'll bend the connector in your iPod.

This is exactly what happened to mine
