I've been using apple products over the last few years, starting with an IPhone 3GS and I love the way they simply work, very little fuss and the quality of the hardware is great... but!

Ive had an iPhone 5 since they were released and even though the hardware feels the nicest yet, it's software seems to be getting more and more fatal bugs. My contacts don't work, despite the phone recognising people who text or call. Just as annoying, the phone doesn't work as a phone half the time. If I go from an area without signal, ie. my flat, it won't simply find a signal where I know it should do, I have toggle airplane mode to kick it into searching :headbang:

It seems both of these problems are pretty common, even with the 4s.

Are Apple really on the slow decline after an incredible decade?

It's got me looking at other phones, mainly the Galaxy S3 or the Note 2, if it's not too massive in person.

I know apple stores are great for swapping out hardware but has anyone actually had a full refund from them? (I bought the phone direct)

Had exactly the same thoughts. Never bought iphone 5 i owned a 4s up til last month when i bought the galaxy s3 which is rather amazing! :D

None of these issues since going from my 3GS to 5 since release. Both been used in the same locations and if anything where I know there was a blackspot in an area, it got better with the 5

I would log the issues then ask apple for replacement hardware. Especially if you have already tried a wipe and reset up to rule out software issues.

Cheers

Jamie

I had a go with a friends 5 on Christmas Eve. Things I liked - screen, speed of loading pages in Safari. Things I didn't like - case, lightweight rather cheap feel to it, lack of innovation in iOS6. I buy my phones outright because work pay for my line rental and calls and all in all there is no way I'd pay £500 to upgrade my perfectly good iPhone 4 (running iOS5) to a 5. Apple are going to struggle to stay competitive in this market in the medium term. Their talisman has died, there is huge financial muscle up against them and one of their major suppliers is also a major competitor (Samsung). Their phone is no longer the best on the market and the only reason they haven't lost more market share yet is that people feel locked in what Tom calls Apple's "ecosystem" and have iPads/Mac's etc, meaning it is a ball ache to swap over.

ditto - went from 4 to 5 as soon as it came out & have had none of the issues the OP mentioned.

to the non apple fanbois - aside from the crap maps app (which actually isn't an issue as you can just download better ones) - what cant an iPhone do that I'm missing?

Have you asked your network for a replacement SIM card? Apple store will probably want you to try that as fault finding, as well as a full software reset.

Although you can just tell them you have.

The contacts thing seems to be a conflict with iCloud, I've tried the various fixes people mention online but can't get it to sort itself out for more than a couple of minutes.

The connection thing does seem odd, but comes up on the apple support forums as far back as October and people have had phones replaced but with no resolution of the problem.

I too went with the iPhone because I'm already invested with the apple system, iMac, iPad, it was the simple choice. But the phone OS is getting a little boring and these bugs which have started effecting my phone over the last month or so are really annoying me.

Apple have benefited from having such a closed system, being able to make things reliable. Maybe now the hardware and OS releases are coming too often and they can't guarantee the reliability anymore, they've got the same problems every other manufacturer has.

Posted from my iPad......

...although I was contemplating a MS Surface Pro last month.

Can you switch airtime providers at all? I have very variable reception in my house (work phone so can't swap) and it kills the battery life because the phone is constantly hunting for a signal.

I've had an iPhone 3G, 4 and now a 5...
All have worked as a phone just fine and that is my first and foremost requirement.
Also, contacts, calender and other features work just fine and stay in sync with my 2 computers.

My 4S is faultless. However I do agree that the Apple dominance is decreasing.

What I am not managing to do?

Can one insert an attachement with an email using the iPhone email program?

So email program>>>choose a group of recipients>>>attach a picture

I had real issues with my iphone4 when going to Europe. It simply would not find a signal and when I returned to the UK same again. SIM swap was done and despite me being sceptical it has worked perfectly ever since.

Due to go to iPhone 5 in February so we shall see :)

Assuming I understood your question correctly... if you start a new e-mail, press and hold on the body of the e=mail until the "select / select all / paste" menu pops up and there should be an arrow pointing right, click that and it gives you an option to "insert photo or video".

+1.

I cut my full size sim to micro/ then nano sim(long story, but work use bb which i cant stand)

Started to have the same problem, but with my 3g, would never have data unless i flipped the airplane mode on and off, which was very annoying not getting work emails.

Restored, swapped phones etc.... Worked fine on my bb.

Got vodaphone to send me a proper micro sim and problem solved!

I've had both and I have to say I prefer my galaxy.
It just feels better than the iPhone and seems to have more depth to it (if that makes sense!)

That does tie in a little with going to Germany recently, although each time I've been there it's picked up a signal well. Since getting back from the last trip it has been suffering the connection issues.

Getting a new sim every time you make a trip abroad could get tiring...
