iPhone 4S Bluetooth pairing

Anyone successfully paired an iPhone 4S to the BMW nav system (E85 2003)?
I can make an old ipod touch 4G and an Ipad3 pair up using the prescribed method in user manual as well as here but not the iPhone 4S. Grrr.
And before anyone suggests I upgrade my crappy old phone, I know! and I will do. But just not yet.

4S is notoriously problematic for certain devices. I had a similar issue with my 5 and doing everything in this video sorted it for me...

I think the one thing that worked for me was after installing system updates on my phone. Make sure you have no update waiting to be installed
