iPhone 3G cradle - will it fit in the Z4?

I have the original snap in box for the 2G iphone, but the 3G doesnt quite fit it. The rear of the new phone is curved and so I need to change to the new type of box, but it looks different.

Does anyone know if the 3G adaptor fits?
 
I've phoned BMW and emailed numerous dealerships and they say that the 3G phone is too big for the Z4 so they haven't made a snap-in for it. If anyone knows any different, I'd love to hear it because I've searched everywhere.
