Since the upgrade to 3.0, the iPhone is no longer detected as an external audio device on the iDrive display, when in its cradle in the centre console. I will see if the iPhone can be downgraded when I get home. Music is more important than copy & paste. I guess there is no chance of a software update from BMW to fix this.

Yes, it is a new Z4. The last update to the iPhone software prevented contacts working with the iDrive in my last car and it was over 6 months before Apple released an upgrade to fix it. I do hope it will not be another 6 months before Apple or BMW come up with a fix for USB audio with the iPhone 3.0 software 
I can copy the music files (AAC) onto a USB stick and plug this in. But as soon as you put the phone into the "snap in adapter" this disables the USB stick so that you can use the iPhone as the audio device, which does not now work. I guess I will have to go back to charging the phone at work.
