Intermittent Stutter

Hi,

I have an E85 3.0 manual, not a major gripe, however occasionally I get a slight engine stutter/mis-fire, usually happens if my revs are slightly to low (e.g. going round a roundabout in 3rd when I should be in 2nd) or sometimes it can just happen generally when putting down more throttle..

90% of the time car drives perfect, no warning lights or other clues, performance seems ok, just seems a bit odd.

Is it worth getting the Spark plugs renewed?
 
I had exactly this & during the same scenario you quoted which only properly came to light after I'd really given the car some beans, the EML came on & was obviously misfiring, plugged up my laptop & was diagnosed as a cyl no1 misfire, replaced coil pack & the problem went away.

If you don't have access to the diagnostic software I'd suggest you buy one coilpack (Bosch if poss) which costs around £24-£28 from ECP or GSF & replace the coilpacks one at a time until (hopefully) the problem goes away.

I doubt the car will throw any codes until it the coilpack properly breaks anyway if its just a very occasional hiccup like mine was.

Hi Tony, thats really interesting to hear, thanks for sharing that, I'm interested in how you self diagnosed this. Can you tell me what software & hardware I need to do this myself?
It is a strange one as I can drive several journeys without any stutter, then when I think it may have gone the stutter returns to haunt me! I'm taking the car to my local Indy this weekend so will mention the coil pack to him as well.

I got the cable & software from http://www.bcables.com, it was (for me) a real PITA to install though, but did eventually get it to install ok on a Win7 64 bit PC, you can use this setup to diagnose faults & program some of the options on your car such as 3 ticks when touching the indicator stalk, auto lock the car when driving off etc etc.

Just checked out the website, looks pretty good & reasonable price! I'm going to order one I think, thanks for your help Tony
 
Good luck with the software install, it was incredibly frustrating but came good in the end, even a good install takes hours to do, not that you need to nanny it as the installer does that for you, here's the thread I had running at the time...
