Kind of sounds like a loose heat shield but I cannot locate the source because it's intermittent. Has anyone chased down a rattle under the hood yet?

I have a rattle/knocking noise when going over uneven roads, it seems to be coming from the front underneath the car.
There are a couple of heat shields below the drivers seat area. Mine were loose and which I thought was the cause, so last week I fixed them back up but the noise is still there.

Could it be the drop links?
That's what I'll look at next.

Anyone else shed some light??

Did you locate the problem?
Mine was a drop link, had it changed today.

Did see a post with some one chasing a rattle for ages and it turned out to be a loose factory strut brace.
Was left loose after a plug change.

I had this and I found that the heat shield on the top of the drivers side engine mount had snapped and was wedged in between the steering and the mount

Hi there, I am still tracking the sharp noise I heard occasionally a while ago. It is now developed to be going over any bumps. I had a guy from a tyre and mechanic specialist have a road test and he seemed to really know his stuff. Could not find any sounds or looseness with holding the tyre when in the air, with another guy underneath trying to trace and nothing showing. Because it seems to occur equally from left and right he thought it could be coming from the electric steering rack. He asked if this was hydraulic and I said it is electrical. So he recommended to go to another garage. Does anyone have any incite if it can be the steering rack?
