intermittent Charge indicator light

I have an intermittent Charge indicator light on my 2007 3.0i. I'm assuming my alternator is on its way out,.....but before I order a new one,....(I will be checking the actual charge rate with a multimeter), I thought I should check in here to see if the Z4 has some quirky issue other than a failing alternator that causes the charge indicator light to come on and off,....intermittently.

My 2.5 2003 had this problem. I used to carry around a volt meter to test when the light came on but never found anything wrong with the voltage. I also ran a scan but no abnormal readings were found. However, changed the battery and the light did not come back on

A faulty regulator inside the alternator is quite a common problem. It can be replaced separately if diagnosed.

How do I determine if my regulator or alternator is the problem?

You can measure the voltage. ~14V is what it should be. Any less than 13,6V is already weak. It should also not get too high.

There are usually 2 things that can fail in an alternator: regulator and brushes. With worn brushes it will die like any electric motor. If a regulator fails, there will be voltage changing up an down instead of being steady. Or it also just dies.

Regulator pack is a cheap first attempt at a fix, not sure if you can do it in situ.
If you have the N52 engine the alternator bolts need to be replaced every time they are released (aluminum stretch bolts).
