Interface for Apple iPod

The previous owner of my Z4 fitted the interface for Apple iPod in the car, and I know nothing about iPod. Is iPod same as iPod Classic? The interface only works with Apple iPod, iPod mini and iPod Photo. I'm thinking about buying one from ebay. Which one/what price should I buy/pay for second-hand? Any ideas? Thank you.

What iPod interface?

iPods have different generations, but have the same connector (well, most of them). I think the most helpful would be if you post what the interface is called.

I use a fourth generation iPod in the car. All of the iPods work in my setup though.

Yes, that is what I said. However, if you have an average interface such as the DICE, not all iPods are supported. Think the Classic is one of those that don't work with DICE.

From BMW Accessories catalogue:

"Interface for Apple iPod
The iPod interface allows the Apple iPod, iPod mini and iPod Photo to be connected to your vehicles audio system. By selecting genres, artists, albums and playlists it is now possible to access your entire music collection at any time in your car. The music stored on the iPod is played by the audio system and the iPod is also charged at the
same time. To ensure that you do not lose control of this volume of music, the audio display integrated in the dashboard shows the current track or your position in the selection menu. The maximum number of folders that can be displayed is 255 and 1 folder equates to 1 artist or 1 album (non SA6FL). When iPod connector is fitted, CD changer function is disabled and can no longer be used."

Going on that I would get anything other than the classic, which IIRC is the latest. I had a 4th gen going through dension icelink plus (very similar to yours) only problem was after 4-5 days of non use it had to be discconected and reconnected to work (known issue) now have 5th gen 80gb and been rock solid ever since.

The Classic works with the DICE, I have the 160gb Classic and iPhone and they both work with it.

When I posted, you hadn't

Also remember, when BMW printed their catalogue, there were only those models. New models use the same interface so should function properly.

Does anyone have a link to a guide for fitting the iPod Interface? I bought one from my local stealer yesterday but don't have any fitting instructions. He printed me off instructions but it was just operating instructions (which were actually in the box in a manual already).

Dont get the Touch either, or every time you start the car you will have to slide the 'unlock' bar on the front of the Ipod before it can be used.
