Interested in buying a second hand roadster...

Hi,

I am coming out of a leasing deal on my current car - a smart roadster coupe, and am very very interested in buying a used Z4.

My main question is what should I be looking for when getting one of these second hand, ie what tends to go wrong, when are these cars due big services which I may be in for if I get one of a certain mileage. Talking of mileage are these things good for a few....

Finally, Initially I was looking at the base 2.0 model, but for not much extra in the second hand market it may be that I could stretch to the 2.5. Is it worth the extra cash?

Final question is in terms of costs to fill up a tank, and how many miles you can get on that roughly speaking and is it a good car to own :)

Regards

Jamie

Definitely stretch to the 2.5. A massive difference. So yeah its worth the extra cash.

I used to get about 28/29 out of my 2.5, and throughly enjoyed the car. A really good drive and a pleasure to own.

Would say everyone has an opinion of what to look for re: options etc, but heated seats are great

Thanks for that - the MPG sounds pretty reasonable.

I was about to sign on the the dotted line for a mazda RX-8 on Friday but after a blast home with the roof down in the smart I realised I needed a convertable lol!

An RX8? That doesn't go well with your fuel economy requirements!

As long as you buy one with a full history theres not a huge amount that goes wrong. Just look at the common troubles and wear associated with all cars.

I test drove a 2.5i and will say its a lot of fun. Definatley stretch :)

I've never driven a 2.0 or a 2.2. What is the price difference between the two? Do they even have 2.0's and 2.2's in the States?

I have a 2003 2.5 Z4 (grey with red leather) and I absolutely love it!

It has plently of performance and returns me over 30mpg - I have only used the sport button about twice which is testiment to how quick it is in day to day use.

Its probably a long shot but am looking to sell it soon as I have slipped a disk and its not really the car to get rehabilitated in!

If you are interested let me know and I will give you full details.

Apart from whether or not the 2.0 is available in the US, the 2.2 was an older model which has gone out of production, so you won't get it new in Europe now either.

Yeh, with the facelift North America lost the 2.5 - we now have the 3.0i and 3.0si.
