Intake air filter help

Hi, can someone tell me the difference between these two intake filters, both are OEM (according to Ebay sellers)

They both fit the same space, its basically one with the black layer, one without.
I bought one without black layer, but my Z4 came with a filter with the black layer..

I'm confused. which one is for the Z4, and what's the difference, any help is appreciated. :(

The sponge shouldn't be attached to the filter: is just to protect it during S&H. Mahle and Mann are two OEM used by BMW in several parts (filters, joints, bushings, etc). You should be good.

Wait, I take that back: the sponge is actually part of the filter.
But anyway, the BMW branded filter is manufactured by Mann; the one with the sponge by Mahle. Both work fine.

Yea, the sponge is actually glued to the paper filter in this order (outside air -> sponge -> paper filter -> to the engine)

At the moment I fit the one without sponge into the intake, its fairly a tight fit after the clamps, is that normal?

My 04/04 build uses the filter with the extra filter. I replaced the oem filter with an Hp filter, which is a high air flow filter. My gas milage also improved by 2 mpg.

Hi all,

I've just joined the forum so thought I'd say 'hi' and add to this thread. I bought my 2.5i Z4 Roadster (2007) from BMW Park Lane here in London - for those outside of the UK, this is the only dealership (to my knowledge) that is owned directly by BMW UK, and not a franchise.

Anyhow, when I checked my air filter, it seemed a little worse for wear and so after much deliberation over a K&N filter, I went for a Mahle LX-1250 filter. Having fitted the part, all seems well and if anything, the Z feels sharper in throttle response and sounds as though its 'asthma' has been cured.

Disappointingly, it seems the air filter wasn't changed prior to buying the car (I've attached a comparison photo at; http://goo.gl/HxoGBZ ) - any advice as to anything else they may have skimped on?

Many thanks in advance

Hi KJ,

Welcome to the forum! It'd be good if you could post some photos of your car in the newbie section.
At the very least do a full oil service including cabin filter. Depending on the miles, an Inspection I or perhaps even II may be in order.

Hi bcworkz,

Many thanks for the reply - I'll be sure to post some pics soon!

The Mahle seems to be doing the job rather well - things seem somewhat 'smoother'.

Disappointed in BMW Park Lane though, I'd expect it off a franchise, but not off the Flagship 'Stealer'...!

Thanks again!
