Insurance through More Than?

OK, I've been researching insurance and getting quotes between £600 and £900, nearly all of which require a tracker to be fitted.

However, More Than has given one of the cheapest quotes, and doesn't seem to require a tracker at all. At least, during the quote I wasn't asked for the details of one.

I've bought the policy now so I guess I'll see what happens. Is anyone else on here insured through More Than and could clarify?

Ah - there have been issues around Morethan insurance

From what I remember, they will quote you, and even setup a policy, but the cancel the policy within 14 days - as they don't insure group 20 cars.

This was on a previous BMW forum (BM3W if I remember correctly - will try and find the thread).

Beware mate. Seriously.

*EDIT - found it - you may need to register:

Interesting. I went through them as they're the direct arm of Royal & Sun Alliance. Two brokers quoted me policies that didn't require trackers (A-Plan & Adrian Flux) and they were both through Royal & Sun Alliance. So I thought I'd try direct, and it was cheaper...

A 'computer error' can't last nearly a year, surely?

It's a transmitter that they put in your car. If the car is stolen, the police can 'track' it via the transmitter, thus aiding its recovery.

In reality, it's only of use to insurance companies, because if my car gets stolen I'd rather have the money than getting a trashed car back.

More Than are imbeciles. They took my premium for the M3 and then wrote back to say that they couldn't insure Group 20 cars. I think I contributed to the above thread on BM3W at the time. Phone them to make sure things haven't changed but they are a complete shambles and I can well believe that the computer error still exists.

OK I will be wary but I'm out of the country right now. Thanks for the advice.

Yea, I was right, it's called LoJack here in the states. And God do I agree w/you!! Give me a new car, I don't want something some asshole has decided to go joyriding in and trash the damn thing...insurance companies :x We get BOLO's on LoJacked cars and the 2 I've recovered were pieces of sh!t, but the insurance co's don't care.

Ah, I see. Fortunately there is no requirement by our unsurance companies to have this. Over here, any anti-theft device earns you an insurance discount!

Trust me, trackers are absolutely useless if someone has decided that they want to steal the car. If it is a GPS based one all you need is a blanket (it is a bit special) to "hide" the car from the satelites, which track it. If it has a radio tracker in addition to the GPS one, again you can "kill" the signal by using relatively inexpensive equipment.

I am Eastern European by birth - I have seen my fair share of BMWs or Mercs stolen to order from the West roaming the streets of Moscow or Sofia. It takes on average 60 secs to get a car going according to a documentary on a gang of car thieves operating in Germany and exporting cars to the Middle East via Albania and Bulgaria...

That's what happens when your family - mum and dad - still resides in Eastern Europe and drives decent cars. You learn how to protect yourself... Also, when I bought my Z4MC I was facing the same dilema - to fit a tracker or not until I was told by a friend who works in the Police that modern cars are difficult to steal inless you have the key, thus you have more and more cases where the thieves raid your home and get the keys by threats of violence... It is not easy when you live in Central London...
