Agreed its not about the money. However,the breeder should be pleased youve brought this defect in his/her breeding line to light. (If they didnt already know).
They should stop breeding this line. Be grateful the puppy has found a loving home, return your money and again be grateful your going to fund the ongoing vet bills.

As your well aware,insurance will turn anything away if they can wiggle out of it....Total set of wankers IMHO..

I think your best bet for advice is to ask the question on this forum I go on sometimes in the dog section. issues with breeders are common.

From what I've read, it's basically down to the generosity/non-generosity of the breeder at this stage, unless you want to get a solicitor involved.

This is an extract from the email:

As our contract points out we cannot foresee health problems that may occur after the dog leaves here, or be accountable for their costs.

This is a very unfortunate situation which none of us could have predicted. However, our primary concern is her welfare and although this was discovered outside the normal time we would do so, we are still happy for you to return her to us and we will refund her purchase price.

Let us know if you would like us to have her back and we can make arrangements.

They know your not going to return her and get your money back..... What an arsehole of a thing to say,but legally i guess thats what the have to offer to cover themselves.

They should be worried more about them potentially breeding dogs with congenital heart defects,and working with you to see the findings and possible meds to control the dogs copndition.


I have been involved with GSD's and Rottweilers most of my life and i can safely say that IMHO most breeders just look at the dogs as money spinners.There are the odd ones that want to further the breed and take out defects in the particular strain etc etc,but on the whole i despise dog breeders..

An English Pointer is a brilliant hound,and not a common sight... Is there any find of forum or owners club to see if this particular breeder has any history ?

I think I would ask for the purchase price back to put towards the vets fees. At the end of the day of they refund you they would still need to cover vets fees unless they intend to sell her on or worse. From a somewhat mercenary financial point of view it's better for them and better for you.

Sorry to hear this, pvr. Had a similar situation with our brown lab, but far less serious. It's ended up costing us for an operation and continual treatment for her, but she is worth it.

I'm with Petplan, too. Is recommend them but the premiums are pricey, gone up about four times since I started using them. Currently paying around £2500 a year for my dogs.
