Insurance... (boring i know..)

Gotta say - i was dreading sitting in a room listening to load of BS about speeding and accidents but the bloke was very down to earth and kept us entertained for the duration of the SAC. Really was eye opening to some extent, though the most obvious thing (which was demonstrated with a hands-in-the-air response to a question), was the total lack of knowledge of speed limits in the older generations on our roads.
It went something like:
"what is this sign?" <shows picture of national speed limit sign>
Various responses including one guy who thought it was no-entry ... god knows how he gets around if he stops everytime he see's that.
"What IS the national speed limit?"
of which there were a significant chunk of the audience who believed it was 40, some 50, some 60 and some even 70. I was shocked. In no way ageist, the ones thinking it was 40 and 50 had all been driving for over 20 years.
Where does the National Speed limit apply?
Cant remember any of the responses to this but i remember being gobsmacked and laughing for around 10 minutes.
Equally people not knowing the difference between a dual and single carriageway, and therefore the speed limit (that they already had wrong..) we worked out at least 3 people in the audience thought the speed limit on a dual carriageway was 50.
The things i learnt (or had an educated confirmation of what i thought) from the course:

- * In some situations, doing 40 in a 30 really is a huge risk (usually to pedestrians not paying attention, but also my car..)
* Nobody get's a conviction (or SAC offer..) for 10% over the limit.
* We really should enforce an informal re-test (or training lesson) on a regular basis .. every 5 years or so.
* Over half of the room did not know the rules of the road, whether it was speed limits, how to drive on a motorway, or general (common) signage and road markings.
* Lots of people went away with an increased knowledge of the risks of speed and bad driving, but primarily half of the room learnt the rules of the road properly - and people will no longer be doing 30mph with a caravan down to Cornwall on the A30
