Instrument lighting

On Friday, whilst driving, the radio went off and the instruments screen and iDrive screen went black. After a couple of seconds the system righted itself. Since then the instruments and iDrive screen seem to dim and brighten at will and for no apparent reasons.
Any ideas or suggestions?

It’s now four years old. Yesterday bizarrely the instruments had righted themselves but the ambient lighting is now permanently dim.
Casting around I found exactly the same complaint on Bimmerpost, but there was no resolution posted. So I’m guessing it’s not an unknown problem.
