Inspection II Cost

Hi all,

The time for my Zed to go for it's inspection two has arrived, and I'm just trying to get a bit of an idea what I should be paying for an inspection II at an independent garage.

I called ETA Motorsport near Brands Hatch (was recommended on here) and they quoted £650 which feels a little steep as an inpsection II at my local dealer is £429, so I'd have expected a local indy to be less than that.

What did you pay for your inspection II services? :D

Thanks,

Chris

Last month I paid £320 for an Inspection 2 at SJR Automotive in Chester and apart from some oily handprints on the front wings would recommend them. Although I suspect they are a bit far to travel from Kent!

Cannot help with costings as I do my own servicing. But a word of caution servicing/inspection can be very profitable for the garage and is a prime area to skimp on what they do. A few greasy marks on your wings doesnt mean they have done anything. Similarly a washed car doesnt mean they have done much either. The cheaper the quote the more questions I would be asking as you could be paying for the tyres to be kicked and not much else.
Doesnt answer your question but just be careful with quotes.

Thanks all, it seems that £429 isn't too bad value from a Main Dealer, but will call back ETA and ask them to requote!

I used to pay £350,over 4years ago for my 3.0's insp2,so £429 now isn't too bad for main dealer,non M of course.
M will be Circa £600-£1000,with or without brake fluid change,at a dealer, depending on any discount, for inspection.2.

To be honest, when you look at the schedule there is very little that isn't covered by the MOT and/or that you can't do yourself.

What really annoys me is that 6 plugs and an air filter seem to be worth an extra £180 on top of an Insp I price...

Oil Service:
  • Change the engine oil and filter element
  • Reset the Service Interval indicator
  • Change micro-filter
    Front and rear brake pads:
  • Check brake pad wear using a gauge.
  • Clean the brake recess, check the brake discs
With alloy wheels: grease wheel centering surfaces
  • If rear pads are changed: check parking brake linings
  • Parking brake: bed down and check operation

Inspection 1
  • Check the lighting system
  • Check instrument and inscription lighting and heater blower
  • Check operation of horn, headlight flasher and hazard warning flashers
  • Seat belts: check condition of belt, function of automatic reel, belt locking action and belt buckle
  • Battery: check battery.
Recharge if necessary, at additional charge
  • Body: check for corrosion, except cavities, see page 12
  • Brief diagnostic test
  • Check coolant level and concentration, top up if necessary
  • Washing system for windscreen and headlights:
Check fluid level and top up if necessary
  • Change brake fluid in accordance with the Service Interval indicator. Change after.....years at the latest, at additional charge
  • Steering components:
Check for freedom from play, corrosion and wear
  • Underbody incl. all visible parts:
Check for damage, leaks and corrosion, see page 12
  • Brake lines and connections:
Inspect for leaks, damage and incorrect location
  • Tyres: check air pressures and correct if necessary, including compact or spare wheel; check visible condition, tread depth and tread wear pattern. Initialise the Run Flat Indicator
  • Final inspection, test drive: bed down brakes;
    Check steering, clutch, automatic transmission, shock absorbers by way of visual inspection;
    Check indicator/warning lights and Check-Control

Bloody hell thought there would be much more from these inspections like checking valve clearances and so on. So basically its a good MOT, oil and filter change and new plugs. That stamp in the book must make it at least £400!!!

Exactly my point. For the M the valve clearances are part of the Insp 2, but the rest is really not worth what is charged IMHO. A lot of the Insp 1 items are really what a good owner should do weekly!

Remember that inspections also include and oil and filter change

It is annoying when you see the list laid out.
At first it looks like they do a lot until you actually read it and it only says "check" and then if anything is needed for this they charge extra for it, like topping up coolant, brake fluid, washers etc

Valve clearances on them should be done every Inspection service, 1 and 2.
Insp.2 includes spark plugs,etc ontop of insp.1.

Valve clearances unfortunately are not always done correctly, even by BMW dealers :headbang:
Hence why I now use a BMW Indy :D

got mine booked in for an inspection II next Wednesday at main BMW dealer, should have been £380 but as a friend of mine works there, got it for £230

Thanks all :) Useful to see what people have paid!

Called back my local indy and they've quoted £345 which seems a little more reasonable. Almost wonder whether it's worth going for a BMW dealer as it's not much more (£429) and looks slightly better on the service history.. That said, a BMW indy *ought* to deliver a service as good as or better than a main dealer!
