Inspection 2 before 40k?

What's the earliest anyone has had the Inspection 2? Mine is due in about 5k miles according to the clock but will need it done before that to be within the 2 year window. Currently on 36k so will be going in on about 38k I reckon.
ragged !
The type of journeys/driving that will give you low MPG, will also reduce the inspection intervals.

However, I get better MPG on a Welsh hoon (about 22mpg) than I do driving around London (about 15mpg). Mainly due yo the stop/start, low gear nature of city driving.

The car will also use much more fuel if you're only doing short trips where the engine never gets up to proper operating temperature.

So if it's true that the service interval is based on using 500 gallons of fuel, then a car doing mostly motorway cruising and averaging 31mpg will have 15,500 mile intervals; a car running around London all the time averaging 15mpg will have 7,500 mile intervals.

My average of about 27.4mpg (I reset the mpg clock at every service) equates to an interval of 13,700. Which is about 500 less than what it's actually done between the latest 2 services.

I'd give you the exact figures, but the book is in the car, at the dealers for its 102k mile inspection. My servicing/ownership summary/blog is on my Pistonheads profile if anyone wants to view it. But don't forget that it will look a little out of sync to a normal one due to the engine change just before its first scheduled Inspection 1 - which effectively reset the service schedule starting with a 2nd running service at about 25k.

I might be a contender for this one. My Z4M service history doesn't totally check out and as a result Mondial will only offer me an extended warranty if I do an Insp2. As it's an AUC the dealership is footing the bill (I'm coming up to 21400 miles).

I'm with PVR and buzyg. Mine will have at least two oil services between inspections.

I'm with you guys too, mine has over 9000 miles till ins2, about 2-3 yrs for me, got a couple of euro trips this year which will add a fair few 0000's , but I will have oil/brake fluid every 2 yrs

I'm on 40K at the mo

Isnt the insp worked out on driving style ? hence the difference , mine was at 52k , others at 36 etc , on my audi it varied on if you drove it hard or miss daisy , interim oil for me is just common sense , all oil breaks down , hence on aircraft although they loose some its a constant fill / flush although the loads on a spool are much lighter , I was taught oil is blood as an apprentice , by a wise old man , it stayed with me , now we do specto graphs on oil , would love the tech to try on my engine , but no data base so findings would be useless in concept anyway , interim good if yours isn't a daily just my 2p worth , mine is a daily I do interim oil

My scheduled service history is:
  • 10k - oil service (AUC pre-purchase deal)
23k - new engine (reset service schedule)
    35k - oil service
    47k - inspection 1
    60k - oil service
    74k - inspection 2
    88k - oil service
    102k - inspection 1
So if you were to take the 23k as a starting point due to the resetting of the service schedule, then my I2 was at 51k.

This does not show my interim oil services, nor my (at least) annual brake fluid changes.

Does that not mean that the gearbox and diff went 75k without an oil change?

Nope, as my friendly spanner monkey did that for me at one of the interim oil services.

Plus I got a new diff at 68k

Most of my history is on my PH car blog page.

Inspection 2 is just a rip off in my opinion. You can do it all by yourself. Besides valve checking you can do all by yourself on a M or non M z4.

I see only checks here ... :)) a real work for 800 bucks :)

The Inspection 2 Service is the larger of the two Inspection Services and basically includes all of the items performed on the Inspection I Service along with some extras like differential oil change; fuel filter and air filter replacements; Replacement of spark plugs. Inspection 2 generally runs around $500+ to $800+. Below are the items that are normally performed. If you are performing the inspection yourself, We carry most of the BMW parts you need to complete the inspection and replacement of BMW parts. Click here for the parts and don't forget to purchase the BMW service/oil change reset tool.

Undercarriage
Change engine oil and Oil Filter, check engine at is at normal operation temperature.
Check transmission for leaks.
Check rear axle for leaks.
Visually check fuel tank, lines, and connections for leaks.
Check condition, position, and mounting of exhaust system. Examine for leaks.
Check power steering system for leaks.
Check overall thickness of front and rear disc brake pads.
Examine brake disc surfaces.
Clean brake pad contact points in calipers.
Grease wheel center hubs.
Check steering for absence of play, condition of suspension track rods, front axle joints, steering linkage, and joint disc.
Check front control arm bushing for wear.
Check brake and clutch system connectors and lines for leaks, damage, and incorrect positioning.
Check for free movement of the parking brake cables. Adjust parking brake if necessary.
Check all tire pressures (including spare). Correct if necessary.
Check condition of tires (outer surfaces (left/right)), tread wear and pattern; In case of uneven tread wear readjust wheel alignment if required.
Check thickness of parking brake linings.
Half-shafts; check for leaks at flexible boots.
Inspect entire body according to terms of rust prevention limited warranty.

Check engine cooling system/heater hose connections for leaks.
Check coolant level and antifreeze protection level; add coolant if necessary.
Check level of brake and clutch fluid in reservoir; add fluid if required.
Check windshield washer fluid level and antifreeze protection. Fill up and/or correct if necessary.
Check air conditioner for operation.
Reset Service Indicator.
Replace spark plugs.
Replace intake air cleaner element (Air Filter).

No mention of the gearbox or diff oil changes there, so I assume it's not for an M. Cost of oil for those is about £150 anyway.

I suspect a lot of the time they don't bother with the 'inspection' part of the inspection - otherwise I assume they'd have picked up on the non-standard pads, and discs in need of replacement.

Doesn't matter to me any more as I'm going to my friendly spanner monkey from now on, as there not much point in having a warranty that requires dealer servicing after 100k miles yet offers less & less protection.

My car had a thorough inspection at Eastern BMW in Edinburgh, but I agree that it's highly likely corners will be cut elsewhere

I totally agree.

As your list shows, just about everything on the list for Inspection II is "check" this, that and the other and you don't need a spanner to do any of those checks and it's virtually all visual inspection.
