Inspection 1 or oil change?

Hi everyone

I am new to the board and have a question if anyone has experience of this.

My Dec '06 Z4M R has done 13,000 miles. It is 2 years since it had the oil change service and so is now due a time based oil change. However the indicator states 11,000 miles to Insp 1 but when I speak to Sytner Sheffield they say I should have the Insp 1 now, not just the oil change. BTW it took the guy 5 mins to realise I was talking 'M' despite telling him!

I would prefer to hear your informed independent views before going ahead.

It goes:

1200 Mile service
Oil Change
Inspection 1
Oil Change
Inspection 2
Oil Change
etc etc

If your last service was an oil change the next one that is due is Inspection 1 based on either - usage (milage) since last service or 2 years (whichever is sooner).

So you require an Inspection 1 based on the fact it's next on the list and 2 years since the last inspection
 
I don't agree with that actually as Insp I is mileage based, not timed.

I just had my oil changed and brake fluid as that was due because of the time element, not mileage. My Insp I is not due for another 6k miles so I just did the Oil change / Brake fluid change in between.
 
The minimum requirement is an oil service every two years to maintain your service history/warranty.

The dealer is just trying to get more cash out of you.
 
Thanks for the information everyone. As I suspected the dealers trying to get a little extra. Any ideas what I should pay for just an oil change?
 
£59 for the oil change.
£10 for the filter.

Supply your own oil from Opie Oils or so for £64 for 8 litres, you will have a lot of spare after that so the next oil change will be even cheaper.
 
This is interesting.

I'm pretty sure in the service book for my E89, it doesn't mention Inspection 1, 2 etc, just individual components like oil, brake fluid, brake pads... and if you look at vehicle status on the screen in the car, most items have a date or mileage next to them.

Has BMW done away with the idea of Inspection 1 and 2 ? :?

The newer BMW models have 'condition based servicing' which means you go in many times for little bits of work, rather than once a year for a big piece of work.

The thinking is that the customer will not miss £200 every 3 months, but will baulk at £800 for one visit - even if the total amount is the same (which it isn't as you've got to take more time off to do the multiple visits).
 
Yes, the phrase "condition based servicing" sounds right... Apparently the servicing info is also stored on the key, so they can just read the key to find out what needs to be done.
 
My recommendation is to also replace the gearbox oil, if it was never changed before.
Buy the correct type and quantity from the dealer.

Ideally, I consider that the gearbox oil should be changed at the same time with the 1,200 mile engine oil change, and then every 30,000 miles.
On my previously owned Z4 M Coupe I've changed the oil for the first time when it had about 29,000 miles, and I've never seen a darker gearbox used oil than the one I drained with that occasion.

I didnt know that. I can see what they are trying to do but for me personally, I hate the hassle of dropping the car to the dealer, chasing up on the work and collecting it again. Getting everything done in one hit seems a lot easier to me....
