Insp 1 Valve Clearance Check

I've asked a local, well respected specialist for a quote for an inspection 1 service. He came back with 2 quotes that were £200 different. 1 quote was with valve clearance checks and 1 without. They say that they've never had to adjust 1 yet and if the cars running ok there's no need to check them.

Any thoughts?

Valve clearances 'should' be done on both Insp1 and Insp2 and is why these inspections on an M are about double the price of an non-M.

The difference between Insp1 & Insp2 - and for the £300 difference in price - is for diff & gearbox oil, spark plug, air filter changes.

Mine didn't need any at Insp1, but needed 3 at Insp2.

However there is the apocryphal tale that BMW/specialists simply listen and if they're not too noisy/quiet then they don't bother measuring - which would be fine if they refunded the £200-£300 charge in the cost of the Inspection for not doing so.

I'm don't know if they "need" doing but the car is running ok. I posted cos I wondered if it was rare that the clearance needed adjusting. My M is 6 years old but has only done 18k miles but the clearances haven't been checked since new. I'm not trying to scrimp on service cost as I've already budgeted for it.

I've had some vastly different quotes and I suspect that some garages don't carry out the checks.

my m was running perfect still had to change 13 shimms .to be honest havnt noticed any difference but if parts have worn thats why they shomm up again
