INPA Veterans Please Help

Hi all,

I recently bought a silver cable from BCables (K-Line and D-CAN capable) to try and bleed my brakes properly by activating the DSC pump (pedal is not as firm as it should be).

I managed to successfully install INPA, DIS, etc., and communicate with the car, however, I cannot access the DSC module within INPA. I get the following error with different versions of INPA (5.0.2 and 5.0.6):

Requested control unit: 'DSC_MK60' not found. Control unit found: 'DSC_85'. Program will be stopped.

I checked the scripts I have and indeed I don't have 'DSC_85'. I was wondering if anyone has successfully communicated with the ABS module and if they could send me the scripts they have (all the research I did suggests that's my problem).

Extra info:

  • I installed Mike's Easy BMW Tools (INPA 5.0.6) and also installed INPA 5.0.2 manually from the E9x forums. I get the same errors with either one.
  • My E86 is a 2008 and it seems it still uses K-Line protocol, as when I'm in D-CAN it cannot communicate with any modules.
  • I don't mind paying £15 to buy the one-click install software from Bcables if they have all the right scripts.

Hi
Have you followed all the procedures for setting up the cable, I believe there are a few different settings to choose from, both with the pc and cable,

When you say it connects to the car are you able to read and view the page with vehicle information listed?
I think it should display what module DSC is fitted.
If you are selecting the correct module then it should connect.
Check that your usb is Com1, it likes that position and the correct driver installed to run INPA.
Can it read the engine module? I take it you are connecting to the cabin 16pin OBD socket.
Z3's however have the 20pin round diagnostic socket in the engine compartment, some have 16pin OBD inside the car as well but that only reads the engine and transmission modules. I take it that all you have is the 16pin OBD inside the cabin.
INPA is problematic installing even with so called one click installs.
I have more success using BMW Scanner 1.4 which is a cheap alternative to INPA and scans all modules your car has if they can comminicate. Not sure what options that would give you so unsure if it wouild activate it for brake bleeding.

Yes, I have selected the correct ones. My COM Port is set to 1, and in DIS I can set the cable to either D-CAN 500Hz or K-line 100Hz, whilst also selecting the correct position in the cable switch. I don't think this is the issue.

I don't think I tried to view the page you're talking about, but I assumed INPA and the car are communicating as the 'ignition on/off' indicator within INPA works perfectly and I can read the engine module. I even looked at live data of the valvetronic motor.

I only have the OBDII connection inside the car, I believe. That's the one I'm using anyway. COM Port is set to 1 and I have used DIS to set the right cable configuration as well as put the cable in the right settings with the switch.

Reading the modules wouldn't be an issue for me as I have Carly, I just really need to activate the ABS pump to bleed the system. Would BMW Scanner 1.4 do this?

Not sure it would activate using BMW Scanner, next time I use it I will explore the options it has.
I have noticed on occassions that if INPA dosn't connect to the selected module, it sometimes defaults to display what I assume to be a default bpage, have seen it do this when plugged in to a Z3 I have. Not seen it do it plugged into my Z4 so far.
My Z4 is a 2.5, will have a look in INPA what it displays when I try and access my module.

That's the thread I also found. I couldn't find any new scripts on the internet though, which is why I made this post.

which is why I made this post.
Did you ever get this sorted, Lucas? I have a soft brake pedal and need to do a full bleed with ABS solenoids open.

I used ISTA to activate the ABS pump in order to bleed the brakes.
There is an option to run the pump for 30 seconds at a time if you call up the ECU functions for the DSC unit.

I installed ISTA using the bimmer geeks download link. Very good bit of diagnostic software.

I have the same download link

The bimmer geeks download is a good one. Hopefully you don't run into any issues with the install.
Let us know if you do have any problems.

I know INPA can perform most of the same functions as ISTA, but ISTA is a much better interface. It allows you to scan all modules at once rather than individually.
If you use both, you will appreciate that ISTA is a far better (easier to use) application for most tasks.

Ah, thanks! I have the same download link and cable ordered. Laptop fun tomorrow :headbang:

Yep, all sorted with the Bcables software installed. The others from forums didn't work for whatever reason. If you don't get one with the cable, I'll send you a copy.

FIXED for me - I was having the exact same issue as the OP with INPA connecting OK, but not accessing the dsc module. It turns out my cable switch was on D can (which I use for my e90) but for the E85 needs to be on K can.
Managed to reset the steering angle after some plausibility issues!

Hi SDJ, let me know if your “plausibility issues” are fully sorted. I have fixed mine with a reset, but car is off the road at the moment, so haven’t been able to test drive it for any meaningful distance yet.

Will do. I'd driven the car with a rear wheel at a silly angle after hitting a curb (testing new lsd ;)) , so I'm fairly hopeful now that that's sorted it won't come back.
It's strange that you can't just clear the codes, but have to do the reset. I looked at the analogue dsc settings afterwards and they were all in the green and lights switch off.
