The price was an extra 15 grand for the ordinary gearbox. You know, because BMW. You could also get an ordinary ragtop for an extra 10 grand.

The real reason being that that at the time the design decision was made ZF didn’t have an auto box strong enough to take the torque of the N54..once ZF did have those torque capable boxes DCTs were dropped throughout the BMW range
