Induction kit for 35iS

Anyone had experience with modifying standard air filter to an induction kit on a 35iS and the pro’s and con’s. Probably boredom as to why I’m thinking about it but would like some opinions or experiences.

There's a few options out there.

This one here for example: https://www.mlperformance.co.uk/collections/bmw-z-performance-parts-e89-z4/products/afe-power-bmw-n54-magnum-force-stage-2-pro-dry-s-cold-air-intake-135i-335i-535i-1m

BMS also make a cheaper version. https://www.mlperformance.co.uk/products/bms-bmw-e-chassis-n54-dual-cone-performance-intake

Ignore the claim of increased power, if anything those dual cone intake designs have shown to actually decrease power because they suck in hot air. You will get a different induction note from the engine though.

Had my 35i mapped by Celtic Tuning a few months back. Afterwards we were talking 'cars' as you might expect and I asked about induction kits. The reply was basically yes but only if they draw air from outside and not warm air from under the bonnet, and under a Z4 N54 bonnet it gets dam hot.
Basically if your drawing warmer (less dense) air from under the bonnet it will undo any gain made by a free flowing KN filter or similar.
Either way the gains are tiny compared to cost but you do get a great induction noise.
The first kit you list claims to be cold induction as it has a heat shield, dont quite see how that enables it to draw cold air! For that money I would get catless downpipes, I did, brilliant mod...

Thanks all for the info, much appreciated. I had read about the heat intake would have a negative impact so need to take that in to account. When I bought the car last year it had the cat less downpipes and cone filters already fitted from the previous owner but I asked the dealer for the cats back in and air filter back to stock mainly because he’d struggled to get it through the MOT with the cats out. The exhaust back boxes are also non stock so the exhaust sounds better than the standard fit. Gutted now I didn’t ask for the air filters when I collected it so at least I had a choice. :headbang:

The intake is a waste of time, it's the downpipes that you really should have kept hold of. They improve the exhaust sound, make the turbos spool quicker and add an extra 30hp to a tuned vehicle.

It sounds like your car has already had the secondary cats removed though which means it will struggle to pass an MOT if you get rid of the primary cats in the downpipe, sadly removing them provides no power increase, just extra noise.

Listen to what R.E92 is saying, the cone filter gives a little more induction noise & no performance gains, The only thin it does do is look nice under the bonnet. The route to take is to swap out the downpipes & have a look at MHD if you fancy a more power.
