iDrive Navigation Map Update

Has anyone purchased or updated the Navigation Maps on iDrive? My 2009 car states 2008-2 maps which occasionally is causing me problems as it tries to route me on roads that have been closed, or indeed around new roads it knows nothing about. So, I'd like to get this updated, but it appears you can't simply pop DVDs in any more as the car takes between 2-3 hours to update along with requiring some form of FSC auth code and therefore is apparently best done at a dealership, likely with increased costs for doing so... I'll speak with the dealership next week when I'm in to finally get the bathtub rear lights finally fixed...

Sent you a PM.

I know reading your past comments about thinking about extending the warranty once it expires. Ive done mine today, Comprehensive £442, Zero excess and no BMW emergency service.

Just for your reference here is the levels for Comp without BMW emergency.

£442 Once payment Zero excess
£41 Monthly Zero excess

£349 Once £100 excess
£32 Monthly £100 excess

£268 Once £250 excess
£25 Monthly £250 excess

Add £80odd to each yearly if you want BMW emergency cover

I'm interested to know the answer as well. My new (to me) may 2009 e89 23i has the same maps (2008-2) and i would be interested to up date them.

Cheers

Gerry

Had mine updated to 2011 maps when I bought her last September - cost approx £115. The installation is carefully controlled by BMW who have to issue some sort of 'unlocking code' to allow the install.

Think the maps are free to download / upload, but the activation code is what is charged for ...

When I collected my new 1'er last year they hadn't put the license code in, so the nav wouldn't work. They emailed me the code and I put it in, and all ok.

Unless it checkes back to a central server, then in theory the code could be hacked (like the windows 95 or 98 code), but I guess if it checks back, then they would be able to prevent this.

So it might be possible to work out the formula and create a new one on a "per car" basis, but reckon it must check back with BMW to authenticate - too many Jack Sparrows around!

I have the 2012 maps (assuming the E89 has the same hard drive based CIC system as the new X5 ???), but noticed that Google view is only available at a larger scale. Does it work on a smaller scale in cities?

You can get the disks i think cheap from BMW or download from certain places on the net.

Its the FSC code that costs, i think it was £225 when i checked although im not sure if thats set in stone. There is no way to get codes free only option is official BMW or from people who are able to supply them. I got mine for £62

Just a warning on the map update, I've had it done, via a non dealer route to 2012 maps. It does work, but, on cars older than MY2011 it will also require a CIC (idrive) update to work fully (otherwise you get map searching issues like multiple identical destinations and possibly other issues I've yet to find). The CIC update is dealer only and I'm having mine done today. You can't just update the CIC, every system in the whole car must be brought up to date. The cost... £221 albeit I've managed to work out some discount and it will be paid in dealer credit I have. So not for the feint hearted.

Having used the new navigation, I have to say I am disappointed compared to the older system.

It would NOT route via the channel tunnel across to France and forces the route via a ferry, even though I switch on "no ferries".

No Route information available like on the older system, only a little map showing the route as a map rather than a list of places it used to do.

Looks modern, but lacks functionality now :(

Not sure about the tunnel, never used it, but route information (step by step/places list) is available as is much more traffic information. 3D maps are useful when trying to figure out where you are. I find the system superior to the old one in my e85 by a huge margin, but then it depends what you want of course. For me, that, plus ease of controlling car settings, phone book, the online portal, not to mention the 12GB music storage library, all controlled via voice makes it a very nice tool indeed.

Interesting about the tunnel comment... no matter what settings I choose for route criteria, mine will never route through the Clyde tunnel in Glasgow!

I personally love the sat nav pro system.

+1
I've been experiencing the same issues on my 09 Pro satnav following the DIY map upgrade and i've been chatting the issues through with Maniac to see how to solve them.
They are not major, principally it seems like the older firmware displays multiple destinations in multiple langages, e.g. Edinburgh has about 5 entries (with different spellings, presumably due to different languages,) and street names are duplicated inside each city destination. it does not seem to be as great a problem for smaller destinations, presumably as there are not large enough to warrant foreign language spellings. I did notice on a europe wide scale, places like prague and warsaw were displayed on the map in local language (i.e. foreign spellings), but i'm not sure how this reflects on the destination input side of things... i'll check at lunch time)

I'm waiting to here the outcome of Maniac's car update todays before booking mine in to have the entire car recoded. - dealer estimates 1.5-2hrs. (£230 ish) :(

How can I get the route list info?

The other issue I had on my European trip was "detour" via traffic information. Once you select to look at the potential detour, I could not see where it was detouring me to and for the life I could not stop the detour once I looked at it to see where it was taking me.

Once I got in the channel tunnel, it finally "warned" me about that part of the route was including the tunnel. I had checked the "do not use ferries" option and it had a fit about that as it stated "ferry is part of the route".

maybe it isn't smart enough to make th edistinction between th etunnel and a ferry, therefore it assumed anythin crossing the channel was by boat?

No, I first selected the destination as normal and I saw it was going all the way to Dover.

That is when I tried to force it through the tunnel via "Fastest route", "Efficient Route" and "shortest route" settings, all of which found that a 75 minutes Ferry trip was quicker than a 30 minutes Channel Tunnel one :)

Then I thought it might work if I selected "do not use ferries" after which the system had a fit and stated that it could not plan a route as there was a ferry involved.

On the flip side, the 7 digit standard post code option in the CIC system is nice to have now so I can actually get to the right location.

Sorry you had problems with your update maniac, ive not had the issues you experienced but before updating my maps when my Z was having some warranty work done i mentioned to the dealer the idrive had frozen a couple times (It hadnt but its an easy way to get them to update the system for free, done this in the past and always works).

This must be the reason i didnt have any problems with my map data.

Along with the CIC update couple other things changed on the car, icons on the trip computer.
