hi
when i start my zed on a very cold morning the idling revs keep going up and down between 500-1500 rpm it only last for a minute or so but i live very close to a road junction and it can make pulling out into traffic interesting! its been into the dealers but they say there are no fault codes has anyone experienced the same problem

I have a 23i and would say thats not normal for cold weather.
Mine starts fast idle about 1k then back to 700ish after about a minute.

Are you saying that a dealer plugged it into their computer and it said 'no' problem and they just gave up!

I would go elsewhere, where they might know what they are doing.

My old 23i used to do that and judder like hell pulling away from a standstill when cold.
You need to give it the beans, but then you look like a boy racing cock pulling out at junctions!!

yes thats what they did i am going on holiday at the end of the month so i am going to leave it with them to check it, as its intermittent i will try and
and record it on my phone when it does it

Shot in the dark, but thought i read somewhere about previous version Z4 or car using same engine having similiar problem, something to do with an idle valve on intake.
Think there is a youtube video.
Something about how it could be taken apart and fixed.

I know of that problem as have fixed it on my sons e46 but that causes more of a rough tick over not the same as mine is doing but thanks anyway

Mine was a bit like that before my HVA problems. The HVA's were ticking badly on cold starts (not sure if your engine sounds quiet or not on cold starts?) and idle was moving around from about 500rpm to 1000rpm. I had the HVA's replaced which still sounded tappety on cold starts but the idle was better. In the end I had a complete cylinder head replacement (which apparently is a modified head, not sure I believe that or not) as they couldn't sort the ticking HVA's and now the car is quiet and smooth as silk like I would have expect from a 6 cylinder.

Mine's a 2010 and does the same on cold starts. It only lasts for for about 30 secs but can be a bit of a swine when trying to reverse out of my very tight garage. Did anyone get this sorted out by a dealer.

The Z is mothballed for the winter but will still be under warranty when it emerges in the spring.

I've just bought a '10 23i and it's not done this on the cold mornings this week. Starts and idles at a constant speed... so I'd say it's not normal.

Or it is, and mine's broken :D

Thanks for that I'll get in touch with the dealer who sold it me and ask if they'll take a look at it.
