That black box is the DISA, you'll find more info about that on here - there is a diaphragm off the back of it, IIRC, if that's what you mean. A search will give you the removal and cleaning process which should show / tell you what you need to know.

pretty much describes my issues completely. could this possibly bring on the emissions light too? ill pull it out and clean it tonight

Done mine a few weeks back......................doddle of a job.

15 mins tops.

Tip, remove the airbox lid, MAF and middle hose as one, just unplug the MAF connector. This gives max access to the lower DISA bolt.

Cheers, just had a word with one of the techys at work that used to work at BMW he near enough confirmed thats what it will be also beringing the emissions light on..

just trying to soft out the little niggles before i sell it
