I REALLY love my z4 but.....

I have had my zed into the same dealer three times now for the same problem (engine ticking when warm and idle). The first two times they claimed to of replaced the tappits and some sort of valve timer. When I took it in for a third time (only two weeks after the last time) the called me later on saying that they couldnt hear a noise. basically fobbed me off. My warranty expires at the end of this month and I can not get out of my head that they are trying to fob me off until my warranty expires!
Any suggestions? try a smaller dealer maybe?

Few links to what may be your issue

Since your dealer has been informed of the *issue* prior to your warranty expiring - they should honour any claim realted to this same issue.

I would defo recommend extended warranty for around £46 a month with zero excess

Cheers

Not this is it?

If it is, it really is a doddle to check and fix.

My mate had a clutch rattle (went away when clutch in) managed to get the clutch changes.......then the entire gearbox.....still happened......apparently (via here) its not uncommon.

Maybe google and see if your issue is common or not? My engine does seem to tick a bit, almost like its low on oil when it isnt.

Clutch rattle is easy to spot. Clutch in and it goes away.

Just thrust bearing wear.

As per N52 rattle, lots of things it could be. Just check for obvious stuff first I think. Are N52's a bit ticky as part of their nature anyway?

can this be taken out on any aged zed? I would like to take out a warranty with a dealer if it were possible.... mines an 04 plate and not had a warranty for a while...

In theory yes, but they could also claim that they inspected it recently and found "nothing wrong," so anything "new" would be out of warranty and not covered. Just sayin'. I hope I'm wrong.

I had the N52 HVA clatter issue, but it was temporarily resolved with their chicken sheet engine rev pressure treatment. Mine wasn't really that bad, I decided it wasn't worth the hassle to persue a more permanent fix. In fact, since I made a point to not drive it short distances and to drive in lower gear once in a while  , it hasn't returned. I may have made a huge mistake  , but it's too late now, I'm not going to stew on it, nothing to be done now and it works fine so far.

What is the N52 HVA clatter issue?

What actually goes wrong, or doesn't, or wears?

Is it similar to the DISA on the M54B30... ie, just a rattly part as it gets old and a part you can just replace when it's getting past it's best?! Or is it a fundamental engine design issue!?

Uh, I guess most people call it a rattle. See links in jamiez' post above, same thing. Sorry for any confusion and late reply, I've been away. Just got around to looking at old threads in which I spouted off with rather useless drivel.

No, it needs to start straight after the manufacturers warranty has expired and be continuous with no time gap. Not sure if used car warranty can be extended, but the same rule would apply me thinks.
