As a guess I think they just agreed to the price, because they probably have a plan in the next 5-10 years to convert the whole network to be automatic and all the drivers will get fired, Bob Crow will be hanged and there won't be anymore strikes!
Very grim job indeed. Its the same across the transport industry. Train drivers are also paid handsomely but think of huge responsiblilities and burden in delivering a huge amount of the public safely across the network.
For the 000's of journies a train makes there will be a number where the drivers intervention could avert a catastrophy.

This was discussed on the Jeremy Vine show this afternoon and apparently they have Bob Crow their union leader to thank for getting them their pay and conditions :thumbsdown:
The Gf is a cop with 27 yrs service and gets nowhere near that,so is a tube driver worth the 50k over any of the emergency services there is something wrong somewhere :?

I wonder what the hourly rate is for a tube driver, and whether they are paid half of that hourly rate when on call and working evenings, weekends, bank holidays, et cetera. I wonder if they are expected to work without any scheduled break, often having to snatch something to eat whilst walking along a corridor. I wonder if they have to make life or death decisions on a daily basis, or even at all. Not that I am complaining, but I sincerely feel that they have an incredibly good deal when when their salaries are compared with their responsibilites, and with the salaries of other public sector workers.

Edit: perhaps once the underground is automated that nice Mr Crow would consider unionising my colleagues so we can have such a lovely time!
