was in no hurry yesterday driving back to east london so thought I would try and save some petrol,

The journey is about 170+ miles. normally I average 28 ish.

Yesterday I got 45.5!, and it was 50.4 till I hit london traffic.

Its a massive petrol saving, I used 1/4 a tank ish, maybe a little over, normally i use over half.

I ruined it all by ragging it silly to a mates last night.

hey koolchris99, what speed were you doing on your journey, and at what point did you reset the average mpg display? Just wanted to ask, as I'm going to do a fair bit of driving at the end of the week so I'll have a go too!

I drove to my petrol station, filled up with V power then reset everything, (so had about 3 miles of normal town driving before mway, then 150 miles of mway then 20 miles of london)

On the Mway i was going indicated 55-60, and hid behind lorrys for a fair bit. that gave 50.4 mpg

Journey average was 41.5mph, but that was after crawling through london traffic etc.

both those are true, i never said it wasnt fucking boring, and everytime a boxter or TT flew past i had to resist the temptation to press sport, stamp on the go pedal and teach them whos boss.

the other worry about following a lorry is the amount of cr*p they throw up from the road surface...

Had to Google "hypermiling" to see what exactly it meant.

There are websites dedicated to it: http://www.hypermiler.co.uk :D

I probably don't do motorway mileage. All my 2.5 engines (from E39 to E89) can't get more than 33 mpg from a tank. :(

Yep, I concur.

London to MK I average around 45 mpg - forced to drive at 50mph for most of it due to the lane widening on the M1.

I've managed to get the MPG into the mid 40's (44.8 I think) once when I discovered a friends flight was delayed by an hour and a half when I was already 25 miles from home to pick them up. I normally try to behave myself and save some £ but I normally get bored after about 2 miles and hoon it!

Mate, that`s some going !! 8)

This just goes to show how this 3.0 engine must be the epitomy of efficiency, I mean seriously, that`s blo*dy DIESEL mpg !...............and for it still to shift like it does when you open the tapps really is quite something else..............what a motor !!!

I drove from Northampton to Manchester and back yesterday to see my daughter who moved up there a few months ago. We took my wife's 1.3 Yaris as we've fitted winter tyres and snow was forcast. We cruised at 75 to 85 all the way there and all the way back and the trip computer showed 36mpg. I commented at those speeds, the Z would have done the same mpg. Funny that!!

I have been banging on about this for ages. The mpg you can get on a run in my 3.0i is superb. I did Reims - York (452m) on one tank which was 37mpg. This was mostly at 70 but included hammering the last 20 miles to get to the ferry, a detour around Bendtford and the car was totally brimmed with luggage and people.

I have no doubt at a steady 50mph you could get 45-50mpg on a long run. Z4's have great aero and in 6th gear at those speeds the engine is almost ticking over.

I wouldnt pay too much attention to the trip computer though.

I've found the trip computer to be not worth looking at over short distances, but it's always checked-out pretty well on anything over about 50 miles or so.

Yeah most people cant believe its realistic to get around 40mpg in my car.... that being said... having a heavy right foot in town you can get it close to single digit figures
