HVA (Hydraulic Valve Adjuster) Problem?

Dropped my car off at the dealer this morning with what I believe is a faulty/blocked Hydraulic Lifter. The problem is intermittent but was there when I started the car on Saturday, so havent driven it until I dropped off this morning, the dealer is only half a mile away so doesnt get warm enough to cure.

Service Manager heard the noise but doesnt suspect the HVA's as he called them as "they dont have any problems with them these days" in his words. I think he will have to eat those words, but wondered what you all thought, he mentioned an injection problem, but I dont believe this to be the case as once the car is warm and the oil has circulated the problem disappears maybe a month or two and if it were an injection problem it could happen at any time.

Have any of you had issues with the HVA's on your Z4's or other recent BMW's?

How did you get on with the stealer? As I mentioned, mine did something similar but hasn't done it since.

Thinking back to a 205 we had years back, it had a leaking exhaust manifold gasket wich sounded nothing like you would've expected, much more like metal on metal. It also went when it warmed up and closed the gap.

Dont know yet, when booked it in on Monday told them I wouldnt collect until Friday afternoon, so that it gave them plenty of time to get replacement parts if required and time to change all four wheels. Nothing worse than taking your car in and for the dealer to say this and that needs replacing, and we have ordered the parts so need to book you back in.

Dealer called me this morning to advise car was ready, 4 new alloys and the HVA's had been cleaned using the procedure advised by BMW which is just to rev the engine at 2.5k for a sustained period of time. I acknowledged this and advised I would collect the car later.

Then I started thinking and was getting prepared to have ago at the dealer because I couldnt see how this would fix the problem as this is all the technician did 2 months ago.

Anyway collected the car this afternoon, the service receptionist showed me to my car and he started the engine, few taps and the noise went away, fine I thought. I then started going through my concerns about the procedure etc. I pointed out that my neighbours wouldnt be to happy being woken at 7AM by me revving the car for 2 minutes, and also it cant do the engine any good not being warm. Anyway as we are talking, the engine starts getting louder and all you can here is tap, tap, tap......

Service receptionist went and got service manager who came and explained that BMW would not allow them to change any parts and they had to follow procedure as above. He did however conceed there is a problem now and on Monday will be contacting BMW to establish the next move. I have pointed out again there is a history to the car around the HVA's after having BMW assist out in July 07 2 months after getting the car because of the issue, and that when I collected from dealer at end of December 08 after oil service the problem was there and one of the technicians corrected using the 2.5k procedure.

Service Manager was disappointed the engine was making the noise when I collected, I advised I was delighted as it confirms their procedure does not work and there is a real problem to be sorted.

I will keep you updated.

4x new alloys = great result.

HVA unresolved, but on the path to deeper state of resolution = ok result :D

Canny complain with that!

Just to be sure though... is the green cylinder opposite the valve spring in this image the HVA? Do they just get a bit blocked and not inflate well?

Thanks for the update, hope they sort it quickly. Haven't used mine since but started it in the week to record the noise (on the basis it prob wouldn't do it by the time I get to T Wells) and it didn't do it.

Good news about the wheels.

Interesting thread - im keeping an eye on this as my car is the same year as yours and my warranty expire at the end of may!!!

Yes those are the HVA's, it is still my belief that one of them is suffering from some sort of blockage, there maybe some factor that have caused this

1. Car built Aug06
2. Car Registered Dec06
3. Car covered 51 miles between Dec06 and May07
4. Collected Car May 07 with 72 miles on clock after 20 mile test drive
5. July07 Problem happened first time called BMW assist out.
6. Dealer found Oil Filter not seated correctly.

The car stood still for 10 months, this could be a factor along with an Oil Filter that wasnt seated correctly. It may have been possible for contaminates to bypass the filter as it is located in a chamber, so there would have been no visible leaks.

My dealer has all this info as they dealt with BMW assist and found the Oil Filter issue, just waiting to here Monday/Tuesday.

Priority now though is to go and protect my new alloys, just praying the rain holds off. :(

Is Brian still there (assuming it is Chandlers Hailsham)? He generally is quite good.

He is indeed and we have a good relationship, he knows how particular I am, especially when it comes to my wheels. I made it clear I would not accept any damage on my new ones, as they managed to damage all four of the old ones just by removing and inspecting.

It maybe minor but it shows a lack of care. Brian said they would wrap the new set up in cotton wool.
