Huawei phone - really impressed!

After an avid apple fan - being with various iphones for 7 years now, i've finally jumped ship.

The 7 was the final nail in the coffin for me. Having lost the aux in facility & the fact it didnt have a physical home button & kept crashing , it was the last straw. Managed to flog it on Schpock last night for a reasonable £420.

I do still love the 'ease of use' of apple stuff, however, Android has come on leaps & bounds over the last few years & my latest Huawei is a testament to that. Its a P9 'lite' which is the cheaper version, naturally. £149 on pay & go (im on contract, just swapped the sim over) and it retails @ £249 currently (Was on special offer with Voda). Running android marshmallow, its very user friendly (not quite as much as apple mind) and for the VAST difference in price, i cant fathom why iphones are so expensive, other than being a fashion accessory!

Anyway, no real point to my post, just thought i'd share to those who are curious to make the move from apple

I'll be following you over to that ship when my iphone 4S finally dies.
Lau has had every iphone that's been out and she's locked herself into this personal upgrade mentality 'gotta have the latest iphone!' I never understood it really.
I was given the iphone in 2012 by a Dutch company I was consulting for at the time and coming from a bog standard non-smartphone I couldn't really see the attraction apart from email.
So I got into it and it's been great for the last 4 years but as I'm on a 20gb, 600mins/month contract I should really upgrade.
I'm tempted by the Huawei phones as they are really astounding value but there are also some groovy CHinese import sites offering some incredible phones for the price.
20gb/month is just wasted on a 3G phone!

I love Android, hate Cr@pple..

Big Samsung fan myself, had the S2,3, 4, 5, 6 and now 7Edge which I love. Brother in law is a fan of the Huawei, and recently got my sis the "Honour" and she loves it..

Chris , your dead right! That must not be a cheap contract either! Might aswell get a decent phone, and as i say, the amount these android cost in comparison to apples offering there is no comparsion in my eyes! unless you want the latest fashion accessory of course.

I guess you could say the same for the Z4 vs buying a MX5- does the same job at the end of the day, just which is a priority, as im nearering 30 now, the latest phone doesnt appeal to me quite as much as when i was a teen :driving:

Mike, i was really tempted with a Samsung, but for the equivalent one i was looking at another 100 odd quid... Not sure if it was the right descision or not? Either way, im happy with the huawei (still dont know how to pronounce it  )

I've no basis to hate Apple - not having ever paid the extortion and always been Android..

Was tempted on recent upgrade (From Xperia z3 Compact) by the P9... but I need waterproofing which limited me to Xperia XZ, Samsung S7/S7 Edge...

Went off Samsung after having the S3 for various reasons... so XZ it is...

interested to know why you need waterproofing Gannet? I have to say, i was always scared of testing the capability of the iphone 7

Not expensive @ €27/month but I made a mistake it's 10Gb/month, not 20. But I still only use a fraction of that, even while streaming bassdrive.com at 320kbps while I'm out biking/walking for hours!

I'm really tempted to go for the Xiaomi Mix as it's really apple-beating tech with that screen, but at €995 youre back in apple's price manor:

I'll prob go for the Mi5s as it's less than half the price but just as fast with the Snapdragon821 chip:

well... be warned - you asked ;)

my first Android phone was a HTC Desire HD...

Part of my commute involves a cycle, and mrs gannet worries about me so wants me to call home when I get to my train station which I am more than happy to do...

Then one day my phone starts playing up and gradually gets worse so I send it for repair - they investigate and respond that it isn't covered because of water damage. Now I had never dropped that phone or got it wet... the only plausible explanation was that it wasn't water but erm.... sweat damage - ew!

since then I've figured it best to get waterproof phones where possible.

I'm also a fan of small form factor phones, hence the z3 compact.... but the Xperia X Compact isnt waterproof :(

I'm a self confessed Apple fan but they really need to sort things out or they will be in trouble quicker than they think.

Certainly an interesting explanation Gannet :D

Chris, that does look smart, but like you say - top dollar. The snapdragon chip is really up to date, it is pretty quick

Are you in agreement that there was some bold moves with the 7 which have put a lot of people off Apple stuff?

Its just not enough to justify an upgrade for many. The main reason is the iPhone 8 will be the 10 year anniversary product where a lot of new tech will be brought to the table I hope so the 7 was just to follow the upgrade path. Apple is isolating many people with their products and completely ignoring others with no updates for extended periods of time with no discounts. The mac is my main concern but people are loosing hope with the iPhone and the iPad and these new "Pro" products are just a joke to people who use them productively!

Not sure whats going on. Tim Cook is a $ man and its really coming to a head now the products that had been planned before jobs death are out... no innovation really! The watch is a bit of a bodge, the new MacBook pro also a bodge with a £500 increase in price for a touch bar and battery that doesn't work. They need some of the magic back and actually innovate without being worried! It boggles the mind they are the richest company in the world and haven't brought out a complete product since the iPhone 4s!

IOS is buggy Mac OS is buggy and the competition have caught up and doing interesting things! The last product I bought was an iPhone 6S which I have to say I love and a 2013 MacBook air which I also love, but I used to buy everything and just don't have a want to anymore.

Really sick of the poor video on the 6S, the main thing that stops me jumping ship is all my music looks good with itunes and has years worth of play count information. Is there an android alternative that could copy the info I already have?

good points there Tom. IOS10 was notably 'freez-y' for me - dont know about you.

Spotify is the main source of music for me, the premium service has the entire music library at your fingertips - it will mean loosing your itunes , which i understand will be a pain.

Why do you think the video is poor? I think its pretty damn good for a phone! Good frame rates footage is nice and sharp.

That's another area where apple have got people snared. Personally I use Deezer and love it. May sound pricey at £15 a month, but you now get 5 accounts on the family package, so saves me money in reality as would otherwise be paying for the wife and kids subscriptions, seeing as all the phones are on my account.

there is an "Apple Music" Android app, dunno if it would import you playlists/play count info though as I can't use it at work...

Google Play Music works fine for me though :D

iSyncr will put your iTunes content onto an Android phone. Available in the Google Play store. Not used it for a while, as like Jamie, I've moved towards Spotify, but it worked perfectly well and brought across playlists etc.
