[HOWTO] G29 Boot Lighting

One of my pet peeves since I got my G29 was the truly terrible placement of the boot light. Any time theres anything actually in the boot (luggage, shopping, etc) it blocks the light making it basically useless, and a complete black-hole in there at night time. So i needed a solution.

I hop on ebay and spot this 2m LED strip:

Turns out that 2m is exactly the length i need for the G29 boot. So order it up.

Installation is fairly straight forward, just use the trim tool to lift the rubber boot seal up and feed the strip in around the boot.

Wiring was a bit more tricky. The instructions with the strip say to just poke the pins in the back of the boot light like this:1757778503458.png

Maybe its just BMWs connectors but this was REALLY unstable and likely to cause a short circuit when the 12v line pops out driving down the road, so i had to find a better solution.

Finding the 12v source was relatively simple. My dash cam "hardwire" kit came with a selection of piggy-back fuse tails so I just located the fuse for the boot light in the rear fusebox, and piggy backed off that:

Finding a grounding point was more tricky as there are precious few bolts in the boot area that you can get to, as most things are secure with plastic clips. I didn't want to risk disconnecting the main earthing point for the battery, as i have no idea what systems might get reset by doing that so in the end i went with securing to the battery bracket bolt under the carpet, with a bit of LX tape to hold the wire in place for good measure.

Put everything back together, and all done. If i hadn't struggled to locate the piggyback connector that i mis-placed around the house, find an earth point, or re-crimp the cable 21 times due to terrible crimps, the whole process would have taken less than 30 minutes.

Highly recommended.

As an aside, i notice there's no HOWTO sub forum for the G29 atm. Can we get one added? (and move any HowTo posts in there)

My fitted boot light has never worked. My fix was to just stick a few motion sensing lights in there. Works great until the sticky stuff gets old. But what you've done here is clearly a better solution. Will consider doing it too.
