It's a really subtle difference, but I've had xenons on both my zeds.....

Pre facelift xenons look similar to facelift halogens. On facelift xenons, there's a "dome" where the inner lights should be. On halogen, there's a visible bulb showing.

Here's some pics to demonstrate.

Pre facelift xenon (albeit with ginger bits removed) - you can see a halogen bulb on the inner light





Now, here's the facelift xenons on my coupe - with a visible glass dome on the inner section

If you have Zenons you would have this stuck on the base of your bulb

You won't have a thumb wheels on the light control module for moving the beam up and down if you have xenons.

I too thought this was the case as I have mentioned the same thing twice, but would appear all headlights self level at startup so I guess halogens don't need a height adjuster dial after all?

They do if you stick a dead cow in the boot. Obviously that'll be difficult.
