How to: Remove steering wheel plastic covers?

Hi.

Do you need to remove the airbag to remove the plastic spoke covers?
I know I have gotten an answer in another thread but I want more input. Some say yes, some say no.

They need to be replaced or painted Sapphire Black, what do you think about that?

For ease I removed the airbag, which was a fiddle with a screwdriver. The reason I removed was so I didn't mark the new replacement parts as they were very expensive!
 
I removed the airbag its a 2 minute job insert a blunt instrument into the holes on the side and it pops off ,make sure you disconnect the battery for about 5 minutes so the airbag dosent explode .
The 2 plugs on the back of the airbag require a small flat screw driver to unclip them ,
 
I'd imagine you want to remove the airbag to be able to disconnect the switches cables.
If I can manage to remove the airbag safely, anyone can.... removing the steering wheel itself on the other hand defeated me :oops:

Plastic covers come off very easily
They have screws on the back of them
Can't remember if star or Allen bolt heads

But you don't need to take airbag out

Simply unscrew and carefully pull apart
Lift gently from the edge of wheel and it'll lift from under centre plastic

I replaced mine not so long ago
10 min job taking time to do so :)
 

Can see the screw holes :)
You will need to move wheel to get left hand side off
I moved mine down to left to access

Ps pods will come out of place if play too much
Need to make sure by clipping in position then doing up screw :)

They my friend are a pain in the arse!!
If remember take time and take pics of the position of them and the damned stupid wiring

Using a screw driver pop the connectors out the buttons are then just held by the covers

Ps, if not reposting buttons, why taking off?

Trust me pain to get back in !
 
I need the part number for the plastic around the MF-buttons as well but can't fint them?

Anyone know?

I stupidly thought at buying the t star covers they included the parts around buttons:("

Nooooo!
They don't
The buttons my friend will cost you around £300!
Plus the £145 or so paid for covers

A new wheel is £6/700!!

Part numbers on back of buttons :)
 
Just replaced the covers but unlike dawg found it fiddly. Next time I'd take the airbag off. The switches unplug easily enough at the rear but I didn't replace them. The part numbers are MFL switch right 61318035324, MFL switch left 61318035323. You can get them for about £150 from Germany but that's still too much for me after paying £120 for the covers.

Mate I have a Maserati
I have learnt to be patient when working on it ;)
The stupid things they do on them, like 3 different bolts for my starter motor and middle one you can't get to as its on back of gearbox!
So under car and hands of a 5yr old job

It can take an hour for that bolt!!
Hence these covers are a doddle

Simply take time :)
