How to initiate "Convenient Loading"

We've had our 35i for two weeks now and absolutely LOVE it :)
However I am struggling to get into the boot when the roof is open. According to p36 of the manual it is possible to part close the roof in order to access the luggage area. The comfort/keyless access package is fitted to the car but doesn't seem to want to play this particular game :(
Can anyone else describe on non-RTFM terms how to get this trick to work please?
Is it 2 quick presses on the fob, or
1 quick and 1 hold, or something else?
Having played with it yesterday all Zi achieved wad a low battery warning!
Is there something in the iDrive menu that perhaps disables it?
I didn't used to think I was stupid but now I'm beginning to wonder. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Terry

go try this:-

with the roof down, press and hold the OPEN button for a few seconds.

I have the smart top module fitted and this is how this one works. the roof unloads from the boot and places it over the passenger compartment and then pops the boot.

No!
But I did get it to work (once) by double blipping the boot button. It part opens the boot, raises the roof half way then allows the boot lid to open as if the roof were fully closed. It's ideal for accessing the load space when the roof is down.
However I couldn't replicate the function......

Is this only on comfort access cars? (obviously smart top doesnt count).

Mine hasnt got comfort access, but will try this out.

Could it be related to battery level, like start/stop is? You say you got the low battery warning, so I wonder if it wont work again unless there is a certain amount of juice in the battery?

It's not clear whether it's comfort access cars only. FWIW there is an asterisk next to the function in the manual. I don't see why it should only apply to comfort access ad it's equally useful to all.
I got the low batt warning on day one after operating the roof too often without the engine running. The battery was ok on subsequent occasions but I was still unable to initiate the partial closed state.
When it stops raining I shall have to try again and record each step. As it stands sometimes the boot merely unlocks most of the time without going into this secondary mode.
It is not a major issue but irritating when it doesn't do what it says on the tin!

The feature is only enabled from the factory on Comfort Access enabled cars. However the feature doesn't actually require any additional hardware and can be enabled by changing one value in the cars coding. Google E89 coding to find out how, or your dealer might do it for you, don't know what their policy is on enabling features that normally cost! Or by getting a smart top :)

If it is enabled AFAIK the only way to do it is a quick double tap on the roof button on the remote fob. I also think there are a few safety interlocks, like the car has to be off, doors closed

Thanks sebbo. I think the interlocks may be the answer. My car has comfort access and clearly has the function enabled enabled as I've managed to get it to work twice - in three weeks! At least I have regained the will to try again.
You said "double tap" but is that a simple tap tap, or do you hold the second tap until roof motion ceases?
I guess this is perhaps where the Gaptech (?) module comes into play but let's not get overly complicated just yet!!

It's the boot button, not the roof button as I said above and its one quick tap then the second one you hold until the roof is in the loading position and the boot lid pops up.

Yeah, tried it yesterday on my non comfort access car and got no where. Tried 2 quick taps, nothing, one long tap and the boot unlocked. Will try the above suggestion, but as my car is standard with no comfort access, its not gonna work (but I'm gonna try anyway!!!).

Holding the 2nd click until the procedure is complete makes sense though - I assume if you let go, the whole thing stops? This would be for safety.

I'm leaning more and more to the smart top module everytime a thread like this pops up! I didn't even know this feature was possible (RTFM perhaps!!!) and now I've heard about it, its on my list of must haves!!!!

It is a comfort access feature only, unless you have smart top or it coded by a specialist. I don't have access to a manual right now, but is this not covered in the manual?

Quote from 2009 E89 manual:

"1. Briefly press the 'boot' symbol on the keyfob and, within 1 second, press again until the retractable hardtop stops in an intermediate position. the luggage compartment lid opens slightly.

2. Open the luggage compartment lid, press the cargo area partition upward & stow the cargo in the cargo area.

3. Press down the cargo area partition until it engages on both sides & close the luggage compartment lid.

4. Press the 'arrow' symbol on the keyfob for a longer period to fold the retractable hardtop back in."

Thanks invisible :o
I have read this bit of the manual but could not get it to work!
It seems that the doors must be closed, and the engine off before the feature is operable.
The spec of your car is almost identical to ours - do you have comfort access though and does convenient loading work for you?

Yes & yes... but I do have SmartTop, which might be the difference. Although I'm sure I tried it before I fitted ST & it worked.

I've tried this today,I must say there seems a very long wait till the roof begins it s journey out of the boot space. One quick press of the boot button, then hold it on.after about 5 seconds the boot tips back to release the roof.

It does work , but only when there's a "k" in the month and it's not raining :!:
Has anyone with a Gaptech (or similar) tried this?
