How reliable is smg

Hi guys still searching to buy a z4 have seen an 03 plate z4 for sale which has smg how reliable is this on the z4

mines fine its now on 109k with no issues, ran it with a supercharger for the last 6k and fine.

All SMG boxes were supposed to have had the green dot update done, but not sure how you can verify it.

I have one with 141,000 miles and no issues what so ever.

I test drove one before I ordered my 2004 to "feel" it, and was not pleasant in my opinion when driving calmly. When hammering it, it was fine.

It was probably more a manual sequential gearbox in the way it drove than the current DCT version.

I bought a SMG equipped '03 Zed on 53,500 miles back in January and have so far covered 6000 absolutely faultless miles. It took me 4 to 5 months of daily driving to master the SMG fully. I love it whether cruising or hammering it ! Six speed, full throttle, super fast up-changes are just fantastic !
There is no way anybody can take a quick test drive in a SMG car and hope to 'understand' it and get to grips with it there and then. It takes time. It is obvious to me that this was the reason it received such unfair press when it came out and which it still gets now.
I wanted a SMG equipped car years ago and so could not wait to check my Zed out when I found it for sale back in January. Upon seeing and driving it I was smitten and so bought it on the spot. I am so glad I did.

What patriot66 said - SMG is great though it just doesn't test drive well but once you know how to get the best from it -it is excellent - I've been on many a forum run with SMG and it has stood me in good stead + 2 Euro trips - autobahns, Stelvio & Swiss passes - I've posted lots before about the merits of SMG.

Just where are these "horror stories" ? Not re SMG in Z4s I doubt as there has been literally only a couple on the forum in five years or so.

Yes - the new double clutch S-tronic, DSG and PDK are better but for the money SMG is great and I had no trouble selling mine on whatsoever.
