How much fuel have you put in?

Had a situation this weekend where I was driving home and was running a bit low of fuel. No worries, there'll be a petrol station any time now ... except there wasn't.

The light came on and the range computer eventually went from 40, down to 30, 20, 10 then ----. I went on for a few more miles and eventually got to a petrol station. She was a thirsty car and gulped back 50.4 litres. But, I thought that was a bit odd since isn't the tank 55 litres?

What's the most you've put in at a single fill?

52.6 ltrs. like line went ------ 10 km's earlier. too close for my liking

when it goes ------ it normally means 10kms left

I've driven aound 35 miles with the range showing --- before.

Even then I only put in around 54 litres. Don't forget the tank will hold more than 55 litres as there needs to be enough room for the fuel to expand in the heat.

mmm yes, not to mention the loss of better mileage...I don't let my tank fall below 3/4, and 95% of the time I fuel up @ 1/2 tank. I just get wrapped around the joy of driving and occasionally forget to monitor my fuel gauge. It can happen to anyone, but I wouldn't make it a habit of letting her tank run too low. You know us women, we like to be kept satisfied

How does that negatively affect mileage? Wouldn't you get better mileage as you have less gas in the tank? You're carrying less weight in the car right?

I was going to ask the same....

That's a very good point Charles. However, if you leave your tank close to empty for too long, more air is in the gas tank. Differing daily temperatures might cause moisture to condensend from the air, causing water to form in the tank - which we all know what leads to. Granted this is stronger during colder temperatures, it's still a possibility and besides, at least you'll know you have adequate gas.

Always intend to fill up nice and regularly, but invariably it ends up being 10 or 20 miles to go.

I know the --- feeling on the indicator - I had it in my 3 series diesel and if they run out of fuel I think it does some serious damage. I managed 3 miles though by rolling down the hills in neutral to make sure !

Where the heck did you learn that? I first heard it when I was taking ground school classes. The instructor was a fanatic about this. I then heard it when i was taking a motorcycle training course. If my car is going to sit for more than a couple days, I always make sure I fill it before then.

After the '89 earthquake, I decided to never go below half a tank as the gas lines were something like 3 hours long and you could have 5 gallons. I ran my motorcycle dry twice and just filled it from my pickup.

That wouldn't be too much of an issue if the Zed had a nice big tank. As it is I fill my car up every 2 days. I'd be at the pumps every day if I was to only let it drop to half a tank!

Thirteen gallons is the most I've added at fill up. Twice I've got down to 6 miles on the readout which made me nervous considering how many times I've heard people say that they ran dry with 30 miles showing on the computer. :!:

mine pretty much equates to a tankfull everytime it leaves the garage :D
It will soon be winter though :x

for me, I have put in 13.4 gal's on several occasions. I don't know how to convert to litres, sorry.
