How much for Oil Change Service?

My car needs an oil change service in 350 miles, (42000) miles. Just spoke to my two nearest dearlers and they both wanted around £230 just to change the oil from what I can determine.

Is there anything else involved in this service?!

How much have you guys paid for this in the past?

Finally, does anyone know of any good specialists in SE england or should I just do it myself?

i may live in the states... but it might still apply.

160 dollars (roughly 80 pounds) is what a reputable service center was going to charge me. 120 dollars was what a mechanic was gonna charge me elsewhere.

so... i wanna say... 230 pounds is a bit toooo much.

i bought my own oil & filter.... and spent some quality time with my baby at home.....

I have had a quote of £169 with their oil £100 if i supply my own @ Fairfield -leigh on sea in essex.

I will give it to them with a couple of can of Castrol Edge 0w-30 in the boot and any left (~1.5 litres) will be my top up :)

I paid £155 +VAT at my local in Glasgow. Was moving up at the time so checked out few dealers in Birmingham before the move - the same company but different locations wanted £235 and £255

Because bmw take the piss, in fact everything is too damn expensive in the uk (anyone got a job for a transport planner/engineer in the US?)

The labour rate at the garage is something like £140 per hour. Now changing the oil on the z4 with a proper lift can't take more than 20 minutes... expect the rest of the time they are 'visually inspecting' things.

BMWS labour rate is disgusting I completeley avoid main dealer totally as i have a very good independent specialist who aint to far from me. Before I discovered the independent garage I had taken a couple of my other BMWs to main dealer for service or repair and it was the same every time, id get a lovely phone call saying my car was ready to be collected and then a list of other jobs that needed to be done in there opinion. The best one of all was for a 2.8 Z3 i had which went in for a service they rang me up to say it needed four new tyres i knew they were low so this wasnt a shock but the £950 + vat for 17" tyres was a big shock! I said ill leave it and shop around for a better price to which they said well let is know if you can better this price as we feel it is very competitive.

The two dealerships ive delt with are total piss takers and wouldnt trust them at all which is a great shame as i feel they and some other dealerships really give BMW a bad name.

My local BMW stealership gets about $140/hr. And, I think he charges about $80-90 for the change. Of course, one can expect him to come up will all other kinds of work that will need to done, which many fall oprey to. But, then again, I'm lucky that my Z4 still has a dip stick and with a vacuum pump the job is clean and a no brainer for me. Just suck out the oil, unscrew the filter from the top of the engine, replace the oil and a new filter. 15 minutes work, $43 for all materials, and absolutely no mess. BTW, if you are wondering about the efficiency of vacuuming out the oil, although some may disagree, the proponderence of evidence is that there is no discernable difference between a gravity and a vacuum change.

In the U.S. if you look around you can find Mobil 1 5w30 for just under $4/quart. The Z4 takes about 7-8 quarts if I recall correctly plus $6 for the filter (germanfilters.com) and you should be under $50 for the change. It takes about 20 minutes unless you happen to have some chewing tobacco and a 6-pack in which case you should allow up to an hour. Do it on a weekend while the wife is around and it's "worth" even more :)

The dealer where I bought mine gets $125.00 for an oil change. $100.00 to replace the air filter. :o
At the (independent) shop where I work we charge $10.00 labor plus the oil and filter(s). This includes setting tire pressure, checking and topping off all fluids, AND replacing the air filter if needed. All makes and models.
Were not in the business to take advantage of our customers. They pay the bills, we respect and appreciate that.

If you change the oil yourself how do you set the computer to tell it you've done so?
Don't have the reference, but if you google or search some of the z4 forums, you'll find the answer.

Apologies if cross linking is against the rules?

Cross posting is fine, but why bother when we have it here?:

I think my dealer quoted me $180 for oil change and changing the microfilter. Oil Change was just $100.

Will it make it difficult to sell my car if I do it myself but save all the oil receipts etc and record the milage that I do it at?

Or affect the value of it?

I would say that would depend on who is buying the car. As far as dealers go, I have no idea if that's taken into consideration.

let's bring this to life again.

it might be informative considering there were like 3 posts regarding oil in the past. myself included!
