How much for a hard top?

Hello,

Just wondering how much hard tops sell for, and if they need a fitting kit?

Varies, I sold one a couple of weeks ago for £860, with wall hanging cover & floor stand. They don't need a fitting kit, but you need to make sure your car has "hardtop preparation" in it's build spec, option code 380.

Have seen some go for (not much) less and some wildly priced ones on Ebay. I could prob have held out for more, but it was in the way and I was terrified of it getting damaged/pushed over in my garage.

Put the last 7 digits of your VIN in here to find out the spec of your car; http://bimmer.work/

Depends on condition and colour. Good condition ones start at £750. I paid £950 for a Sapphire Black one that came with a cover a stand and the three mechanism covers and two allen keys.

I just missed out on picking up a mint sapphire black one for €800 cos i couldnt get down there cos my zed was acting up.
Still grinding my teeth a bit about it. Grrr
Can be had for less than asking price i've found with a bit of haggling if ur so inclined.

While you're busy haggling, someone else swoops in and pays the asking price

Thats kinda what happened.
Seller agreed 800 from askin 1200 i think it was.
Couldnt make it down there and hence someone else swooped in.
Total missed opportunity. But in retrospect i wouldnt have been able to collect and fit anyway seein as betty was off the road for 2 months.
Oh well, another might pop up.....

^ but thats only a bid, I figure it isnt sold yet.

I have seen hardtops in not perfect order (tiny scratch or so) go for about €600 but most hardtops are still €800 or more. Also differs if you get cover&stand with it (and caps.....)

It's strange that the cars (z4 e85) in the uk only fetch half of what they cost on the mainland whereas the hardtops are just as expensive or even more (depending on pound exchange rate...)
And things like the softtop side covers seem to be far more expensive in the uk...

Prices are bonkers for zeds in Holland I've noticed Guido.
As mentioned I negotiated to 800 for a really pristine black hardtop not long ago. Currently holding out for a similar one but not essential. Just a 'nice to have'.

Aye, right place, right time n all that b0llox
Been having a hell of a time today tho, adjusting it to get rid of windnoise.
Tricky job. Knocked it on the head for today. Think I'll be utilising some removable black silicone beading as the 4 hours I spent today have proven totally fruitless. hey ho :driving:

Will maybe have to pick your brain when I get mine... I'm sure all hardtops will have noise to some extent until you fully adjust it properly. If you've spent 4 hours on it already... I'll seek your expertise advise! Not sure I like the idea of black silicone... but if theres no other way around it I guess that's your only option.

Sure! be my guest, only too happy to help if i can...

After a bit of research, I think the main points to achieve are a truly symmetrical fit accross the leading edge where it meets the top of the windscreen. However, the caveat to that is all in the tolerancing of the windscreen rubber seals IMO. There are deviations that I've noticed both along the top flat in all axes relative to the mating surfaces of the roof further exascerbated by the cars own geometry, taking flex into the equation. This would subsequently lead to 'cumulative tolerance stacking' which, if you know anything about engineering is a designers worse nightmare, as you then have to look at ways of compensating without losing sight of the final goal.

IMO If the windscreen rubbers had been designed to retain a positive tolerance relative to their mountings and the hardtop also designed to utilise the tolerances of it's own rubbers then it wouldnt be so difficult to achieve a good enough fit and seal for air-tightness. I really need a white board to explain myself properly on this but basically I know I'm going to have to use a bit more fettling and boshing-in techniques to make this thing fit properly to make it air-tight.

Last resort will be draft-seal, removable mastic etc.

Nothing wrong with a bead of silicone. Did it on mine the first year and it immediately cut out the noise that comes from the small gap at the front corners where it's difficult to adjust. Acted a bit like a whistle. Removed easily enough in Spring, but been OK since as I adjusted it correctly

Any adjustment tips cj?
I'm having trouble getting good lateral alignment after raising the rear right corner to lower the front(top) left corner and hence close the gap there.
Is there an adjustment to move the hood closer to the windscreen that's NOT up or down at the rear corners? i take it these are the only two adjustment points to facilitate good fitment? If so, quite poor design imo.
