Hi All

i am planing ahead as always and i will be buying a z4m coupe some time soon
i will not be waiting for the right car to come my way as it must be a certian spec, but i will be buying a z4mc in the most discustion colour ever made and with this in mind hopefully the owner never drove it and it has very low miles.
i will be painting it white so
has anyone done this and how much did they pay for it.
i will not wrap it , just not my thing

thanks

is that a discustion attempt at spelling disgusting? :poke:

Probably around £2k+ I would think for a good job.

Personally I would get it done at an approved bodyshop for future resale / peace of mind. As an idea I had the bonnet, bumper & side skirts redone at a bodyshop and was £1100 Inc Vat including paying a little extra for ceramic lacquer.

As above, I would think at least £2k for a good job.

I recently had my VW partially resprayed: Bonnet, Both front wings, both rear wings and front bumper and that cost £500 and that was a small independant bodyshop Did a good job though). So I imagine If I had got a full respray it would have easily have cost towards 2K. You could probably reduce some of the labour element by removing bumpers yourself... but probably not worth it.

bit of a typo there ,lol

Thanks folks, kinda what i was thinking , around 2K.

start looking around christmas for the right car, Disgusting colour, very low miles, red leather int and some one who is skint comming up to christmas.

A decent "glass out" respray will be £3k, that excludes the boot interior and engine bay. Frankly I would look for a car in the right colour in the first place.

I think £2k is the tops for a real good job. Seek out a custom car shop as they are specialist in complete colour changes and know exactly what they are doing. I've done this to 2 cars now. The last one was £600 but I stripped it to a shell and they then sprayed it up and I rebuilt it. Awesome job in terms of quality of finish.

Expect it to knock a lot of value off the car as anyone buying it in the future will assume the worst and it will show on the V5, HPi checks etc. as a colour change and even insurance premiums will rise.

Not the best of shots to demo paint

I would not think it's a good idear in changing a colour of a car and deffnatly not a Z4m coupe you will de vaule it. you should reconsider the wrapping route at least when you come to sell the car you cau can put it back to origanal and the wrap will protect
the paint work. take a look at Nik's Mini that has been wrapped if you pm i'm sure he will post some better close up pictures of his car

again folks thanks for the comments

if u photograph the car when being painted you can show this when i comes to resell (i have done this with many bikes)
it proves there is no damage, u can aslo get the body shop to provide a letter to say it was a colour change and not a damage repair.
this will not devalue the car in any way
also a white z4mc with low miles is unheard of , most will have 40+
i am looking for around 10-18K
so when it comes to selling it will be a white z4mc with low miles, cannot see how this could affect the price, if anything it could help it

well this is what i am going for

thanks again

I was looking for a low mileage Z4 coupe ... there are only 3 coupes for sale in the whole of NSW ... so very very limited choice ... and so, like you, I made enquiries about full respray ... and was strongly advised by the BMW authorised panel beating shop NOT to do that.
Firstly, to do it properly is very expensive ... about $10,000 in Australia.
Second, to do it properly, they have to scrape off the original paint .. .which is messy and can cause damage.
Third, to do it properly, you have to remove the engine to spray the inside of the engine bay to match ... messy and can cause problems.
Fourth, you can NEVER respray to the same quality as the original ... Originals are painted / dipped at extremely high temperatures when your car is just a shell .... no wires, no seats, etc. But now your car has wiring, seats, upholstery and the rest ... so they have to use much lower temperatures, and the adhesion never matches the quality of the original BMW factory.

cheers

but i have to disagree

i have been building custom bikes for years now (some with magazine features)and most painters i deal with would put factory paint to shame, most factory paint needs hrs of work to put it right , even bmw paint a lot of orange peel.
and ive neved heard of paint being scraped of before a respary. i think if the paint is in good order you can scuff it with a scotch bright pad( i think as i am not a painter) then prime, base coat sealer , colour and clear

i would never consider removing the engine for a respray but i wold like the glass removed, door cills done, under the bonnet, and front panels right into where it meet the mains body etc

i have never had a problem with and custom paint job ive had done as i pay for a good painter.

cheers

Personally I wouldn't buy a Z4MC that had been fully resprayed. Bumper scuffs are one thing, a colour change and full spray would be too much for me.

However, if that's what you want to do, then go for it. YOUR car should be what YOU want it to be, and as long as you're aware that some future buyers may be slightly put off by a respray, then it shouldn't stop you. Residuals aren't everything!

I understand the reluctance about wraps, I've seen a few scruffy ones. However, if you find a company that really knows what it's doing (and gives a warranty), it'll probably cost you less than a respray and will preserve the original paint. And the resale value. And who knows, you may buy a skanky colour (if there are any) and then it becomes sought after in a few years!

Good luck with the hunt, I'm looking for a Z4MC at the moment.

Just out of interest what colour do you regard as disgusting? I wouldn't have thought there's an awful lot of choice with M coupes. Has someone posted numbers sold in each colour recently?
