How important is using genuine bmw parts

As title really, how important would you say it is to purchase genuine bmw parts when you have a 2003 2.5 Z4?

Specifically I'm referring to brake discs, pads and callipers which will have 12 months life and labour warranty.

Jonny - See thats the thing mate, I'm talking about parts that are cheaper than the bmw part.

Surely they will still be of good quality. I'm certainly not one for over excessive speed etc.

Think like discs and pads I wouldn't bother using OEM as you can probably buy uprated ones cheaper!

Things like alternators and driveshafts ( i say those because i've had to replace them in the past on a previous BM) i'd use genuine... I went through 3 aftermarket driveshafts before getting a genuine one which was perfect in the end.
-- note to all -- avoid Q-drive parts!
 
If you use some one like Euro car parts you will be OK,I would not buy off an unknown seller on the internet as they may be marked up as Ferodo etc but what the part is made of is questionable.
 
Use Euro car parts or GSF & you wont go wrong. Using genuine parts means you get 1st class quality parts,but you pay the premium. :thumbsup:
 
I've been looking at the mtech discs and pads on eBay. Is £185 a decent price? I'm needing new discs and pads soon so might aswel upgrade if I can (within a decent price range)
 
Whatever you do, don't use genuine BMW springs! :o :D
Seriously, on an older car, (mine is 2003 too) good quality aftermarket is fine.
You might be surprised at where BMW source parts from in any case, most major manufacturers source worldwide nowadays, (and we all know where that includes!).
Maybe they might introduce the slogan "Designed in Germany" in years to come.... :D
 
It really does depend on what your buying.

My son bought a pair of rear wheel speed/abs sensors from ecp saving around £50 on the pair, when they arrived we compared the new with the old and you could actually see where the BMW logo had been filled from the new ones, bizarre I thought.

As for brakes then shop around, some of the manufacturers supply BMW and others, Textar, Jurid and Ate are few.
 
The BMW factory does not make brake pads or brake discs, they source them in from a third-party supplier. So just go to the third party supplier, or an equivalent.

I remember a Merc dealer trying to convince me they used "special" spark plugs, not manufactured by Bosch, NGK, etc. Yes, they clearly run these plugs down the assembly line.
 
Recently got euro car parts basic Pagid discs all round - was pleasantly surprised to find they are coated discs (rather than covered in oil), so hopefully they wont rust up too much. Plus, they were £30 a corner or something.
No slots/grooves/holes/dimples - but depends if that's important to you?

I think someone once told me that OEM Z4 springs are made by Eibach - double :o if true... Though I guess they manufacture them to BMW's specification...
