How heavy is the Z4 hardtop?

Hey guys, I just picked up my 2005 Z4 today and it came installed with the hardtop. Since the weather is great I am planning on removing it with my wife tomorrow. I downloaded a pdf document i found online on how to remove/install it and it seems complicated but I should be able to figure it out. I am just wondering though how heavy is the roof? I have a Wrangler and that roof is pretty heavy and extremely awkward to carry and I am hoping the Z4's is much lighter.

Congrats on the new car..


Undoing the hardtop is very easy. Pull the 2 trim covers off at the sides and turn the connectors 90 degrees with the allen key type tool.

Pull the bung out the roof and turn the central lock in the roof near the mirror 90 degrees with the other end of the tool and that's it - undone...

Lift off is a real easy 2 person job. Watch the locating pins don't touch the bodywork. I suggest you lift it vertical a foot then walk the roof off the back of the car and stand it down on something soft.

Incedentally before I built a hoist I removed mine a couple of times myself - not that heavy just bulky.
 
thanks, sounds good. When I remove the wranglers roof with my wife its not that easy for her so i am hoping this will be easier.

I was told 65lbs. Three points to unlock and lift off. My wife and I do it easily! We love ours!!!

This is the part you need to add on both sides to accept the post. This is what is refered to as "hardtop prep".

sorry to hijack the thread but does the hard roof have less blind spots? i hate driving with my top up just because of the blind spots, and the lack of wind in my face :driving:

It's really got nothing to do with model years. Just depends on if the car was optioned with the hardtop prep kit. Although the option wasn't available when the Z4 first came out so the majority of '03 Z4's dont have it.
 
well when i remove the hardtop is there like a part i need to put back in place to cover up the holes or does it just stay open? I don't think I have any covers or anything of that sort provided to me with my car.

You can buy covers that clip in to cover the void left between the folded hood and the bodywork. Black or grey IIRC. They look neat and I have a set, but the problem is that if you want to raise the hood you have to remove them first. Ideal for those longer runs to cut down wind turbulence or when you want the car to look its best. They come complete with velcro storage back to grip to the floor of the boot.

In terms of hood prep that was asked earlier int he thread this is very market specific. For instance ALL UK zed's are hood prepped on delivery

There are small rubber pieces that cover up the holes. They come stock on every single Z4, with or without the hardtop prep kit. You can put the rubber covers back on if you'd like. Personally, I don't bother, but then again i don't drive my car often enough, and even less often with the top down.

Ok, today morning I woke up my wife early so she could help me with the roof. It was super easy, too like 1 minute to remove the locks for the hardtop and then with the doors closed and the windows open we just picked up the roof and walked to the elevator. Once there we had to tilt the roof so it stood upright and I then managed to get my arm across and with the top of the roof touching my belly and the rear window balancing on my right foot I managed to grab the roof by myself and then just carried it into the house. its A LOT A LOT easier and lighter than the Wrangler roof. thanks everyone.

So where the photo with you balancing it like this in the lift???

As per the PM exchange said it was easy and at a push I'm sure you realise you could actually do it yourself. :)

Now enjoy the sun. My roof was coming off today but we seem to be in the middle of a very wet day
 
well in Kuwait I think I have just another week worth of driving around in a convertible before the hot summer kicks in. going to try and take as much advantage as possible.
