Home made stubby

Stubby Mk1 by Shot by both sides, on Flickr

Messing about on the lathe today:
Made with black Acetal plastic, turned, drilled and tapped M5, then polished with Autoglym metal polish on a rag when still spinning.
Picture looks a funny colour as it's lit by flourescents in the garage.
What do you think?

A piece of hand crafted art, but surely, if it's plastic it isn't going to work is it? :?

The external twig acts as the FM2 diversity receiver (covers part of the FM band width) it's only used for certain wavelengths & signal qualities so may not be noticed depending what channel and where you are. If BMW could have got away with a tiddler I'm sure they would have, but nice looking work

I went a slightly more over engineered route, using stainless steel turned, drilled, counter bored, to take an m5 shoulder bolt then parted off and put back in to machine the internal taper to match the taper on the aerial base.
Sorry, no pic, but o.p. will know what I'm on about

Fingers have been lost like that!

We've probably all done it at times but its not a good practice and shouldn't be encouraged.

And people have been killed driving cars, and yet we continue with this reckless practice...

cheers, matches the stainless dust caps but thats another thread...

Got me thinking about stainless dust caps now, I see it's an oddball thread, is there a tap available or did you screwcut it?
I guess I only need a couple of threads and can undercut the rest inside the cap body.

And thats why there are basic rules in order to minimise risk!

Which are what we apply on a daily basis in machine shops all over the world. 36 years on the tools and still a full compliment of digits, no doubt echoed by millions like me. Trust me, where I works is a lot safer than the a1 at tea time...
