Hill start

On my M, I have the hill start function. Great, but why does it release after 5 seconds?

At the end of my road, I stop on the hill - and the hill start function holds the car there nicely. But if I can't pull away within 5 seconds - suddenly, the car will shoot backwards. Bit frightening the first time though ...

What would be the reason?

Clutch burnout? S'pose it expects you to use the handbrake if you're gonna dick about on a hill ;)

What if you did want to roll backwards for some reason. Not sure why you would want to but????

On the only other car I have used with hill start, it works as I expect: It is on until you have generated enough torque to pull away.

Oh - and it works on the brakes - not clutch ...

WLH - If you would want to go back - you would use the reverse

We have all sorts of toys on our brakes ... drying, pre-tension etc etc.

Only M of course

Maybe in case you don't want to go forward, but just rollbackwards without going in reverse?? Would be impossible to roll backwards otherwise (without putting the car into gear).

I've found myself waiting for it to release a couple of times to roll backwards . . .

As rolling would not be "allowed" as part of your driving training, I can't imagine that they would design it for that.

It's not meant to hold the car while stopped....
Hill hold is a transition function....
Holds the brake while you move your foot from brake to the throttle.

While stopped, you should still have your foot on the brake.
When you're ready to go just move it over...

ah, I see ... Still prefer the VW system though which works as I expect it to do ...

It is only there to give you time to transition from a stop to forward motion without having the car roll backwards. Especially useful if you are on a steep hill and are stopped with a vehicle right behind on your bumper.

It does offer gobs of time to transition from the brakes to startup if you simply use it for getting started. I have been delighted with the feature.

I'll tell ya, I'd like to have that function from time to time. With folks riding right on your ASS these days, it would come in handy on steep hills. Fortunately, I'm a good enough manual driver where I haven't had a problem
