higher RON = more BHP??? is this true?

Hi, came across this on the petrol price website. http://www.petrolprices.com/about-fuel.html

'.. Also, a few vehicles, such as the new BMW K1200R motorbike, can sense knock and adjust their engine tuning to take advantage of higher grade fuels. Another user commented that the 2004 BMW 330 also does this, according to the driver's handbook it makes 231 BHP on 98 octane and 221 BHP on 95. This ability is apparently widespread amongst German performance cars using Bosch / Siemens electronic engine controls. ..'

first of all is this true and if so do the Zed's engine have this feature?

any ideas?

Thinking back to last year, I think it was on 5th gear they tested this theory out. On bog standard type cars ther were no gains using 98ron but on both a Subaru Impezza and another car (might of been a Golf GTI) gains were made on BHP.

Its interesting as it claims that BMW user manual (for the 2004 330) actually states that by using different RON rating fuel you get different BHP...

Found these results from the 5th Gear test on another site

Clio- supermarket 81 BHP
BPU 81 BHP
Optimax 81 BHP

Golf-supermarket 172 BHP
BPU 174 BHP
Optimax 177 BHP

Impreza-supermarket 235 BHP
BPU 247 BHP
Optimax 249 BHP

didnt realise the BHP gains on performance cars were that significant!

good choice of colour by the way no fit state

It certainly seems that higher RON petrol in some cars will give gains an aftermarket exhaust and air filter would stuggle to match.

Titanium Silver, Best for showing off the cars lines and you don't need to clean it so often, imo :D

i have two friends with imprezas and it clearly states in the owners manual and the filling cap you are to use 97 ron or higher one of my friends ignored this so now his impreza requires major work due to a cracked piston they are such highly tuned 2 litre lumps they need the high octane all the time.
