High-pitch whistle when accelerating

Hi All,

I'm a newbie to all this so please bear with me! I picked up my first Z4 on Friday, it is a 2.2 05 Reg in the UK.

It has been great but I have one query. When I accelerate I can hear a very high-pitched whistling coming from the engine (in the general direction of the passenger footwell). This only happens when I start to depress the acclerator pedal and the further down I push it it will then disappear. So it only seems to make the noise when the pedal is depressed about 15-20%.

Any ideas what might be causing this? I just want to get all slight issues sorted whilst it is still under warantee!

Many Thanks :)

I'm not certain, but I think this is the ghost whistle......Mine does a soft whistle pretty much when i'm cruising at a steady rpm and a little bit on slight accelerations. That said knowing my luck, someone will chime in and say it's bad and will cost 10,000 dollars to fix.

Thanks for the reply mate. Sounds like you might have a similar thing to me.

Any ideas anyone? Does everyones Z4 do this?

Just kidding - Sorry, Aebus set us up to it, and we can't resist such temptations for a cheap joke!

It may not be directly connected but I have the same isue on the X5. (Runs the same 3.0i engine as the Z4.)
You don't say what engine or trans you run

On the X5 it's generally taken to be either a crack in the air intake pipe, the DISA valve, or a valve on the side of the transmission. Any of then generate a slight whistle on acceleration which BMW claim is normal on 3.0i engines

Search X5world for more details.

I gave up an live with it.

Next time you depress the accelerator and are expecting the whistling noise, try this. Refrain from puckering your lips and blowing hard. This should stop the whistling.

Seriously, hope you find the problem!

Hmm, well me, I notice in infrequently as the music is usually too loud. However it is tied to the gas pedal....push it down slightly above cruising (small accelerating) and it goes away. Keep the RPM steady for cruising an it's there.

I have the same issue with my car. It's not loud but it's enough for me to want to turn on my radio.

Thanks for the replies guys. It happens with roof up or down.

Traxxer, same with me. If I am in the car by myself and want to listen to the engine it can be a bit annoying but not noticable with the radio on.

Aebous, that is exactly the same as me. When cruising at a certain level it whistles, any faster and it disappears. Strange

Most likely this is a normal condition. With the 2.5 and 3.0 before the Newer generation engines, it comes from the Idle control valve, light rapid acceleration pedal movement is when its most noticable.

#$%^&! Had a post then lost it.

Bottom line. Don't live with it !!

Does the sound happen at the same range of RPM or speed ?? If it's RPM, it's probably related to the engine. If it's speed, it's probably some sort of aerodynamic issue. I had a clear bra material put on and I'd get a whistle at certain speeds, 20-35mph, and was able to narrow it down to extra product on the lower edge of the drivers mirror. Found the specific location and trimmed a 32nd of an inch off and presto, no more whistle.

If it appears to be aerodynamic, get a co-pilot and narrow down the location. It's surprising that a passenger will think the sound is coming from a totally different location than the driver. Check for the sound with the drivers side window up/down and the passenger window up/down individually.

Take the time to run it down and kill it. You'll enjoy the drive alot more than turning up the volume to avoid it. Make this issue a distant memory. Good luck.

Sorry to revive an old post but I lost track of this one lol. The high pitch noise that comes from my car doesn't have to do with rpm or speed. When I press on the pedal slowly to accelerate I hear the noise, same deal with releasing pressure from the pedal. Doesn't matter what gear the car is in, the noise is there. :( Going to the dealer soon to have it checked out.

Keep us updated, if the dealer finds something I will be bringing mine in ASAP.

Me too. Very interested to hear the results of this. I haven't had the chance to take mine to the dealer to get it looked at yet, but I'll wait to hear your findings as your symptoms are exactly the same as mine. Thanks

i read somewhere that this whistle was normal for our cars.

just an opinion.

Is a quite simple fix actually, the whistle is coming from a crack on the ruber hose for the idle valve on the lower boot that conects the trotle body to the air intake. The part itself is around $50 and it will take no more than 15 min to replace, NOW I got mine replaced under warranty (good will repair ) and for what I got from the tech the new part has been improved. The part is the #5 on the diagram

I just noticed mine cracked two days ago. I'm ashamed I never noticed it before. I just got the call that my part came in, but I won't be able to pick it up today because I don't have the time  . Glad you posted this. If you go take a gander at my thread
http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=5592 I posted a pic of the cracked hose. It seems like a straightforward R2 so I'm doing it myself.
